About

Professor Alok Tiwari specialises in the minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, with his preferred treatment being endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) and foam sclerotherapy. He also manages patients with claudication (leg pain on walking), leg ulcers, abdominal aortic aneurysm, patients requiring carotid surgery for strokes and he also has a special interest in the management of the diabetic foot. Professor Tiwari can offer both keyhole and open operations and tailors the treatment to suit the needs of the patient.

Professor Tiwari was appointed to University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in 2011. He is both a visiting Professor of Vascular Surgery at Birmingham City University and an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham, where he is involved in the teaching and training of medical students as well as specialist trainees. He was instrumental in the development of the diabetic foot service.

Professor Tiwari qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, London in 1996. He then undertook basic surgical training at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex. He undertook a Master of Surgery degree at the Royal Free Hospital in London and his thesis was the ‘Development of a hybrid cardiovascular graft using a tissue engineering approach'.

Professor Tiwari received specialist registrar training in London and Essex in both general and vascular surgery. During this time, he undertook a one-year Vascular fellowship at the prestigious Westmead Vascular Unit in Sydney, Australia where he learnt endovascular techniques to allow the treatment of patients using minimally invasive methods including angioplasty and Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). He has worked in Singapore for 12 months where learnt to further deal with complex diabetic foot disease and advanced endovascular angioplasty for limb salvage (to avoid leg amputations)
