Mr Ahmed is a consultant in upper gastrointestinal surgery specialising in weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) and minimally invasive surgery. He is a lead bariatric surgeon at Imperial weight centre. His main areas of expertise are in the fields of laparoscopic (keyhole) and weight loss surgery. He has trained in general and upper GI surgery in the UK and at Stanford University and the University of Rochester in the US. He trains other surgeons in the field of bariatric surgery and is on the faculty on numerous courses on bariatric surgery. Mr Ahmed is often consulted by other professionals and medicolegal experts for his opinions on complex bariatric surgery cases. He is also actively involved in bariatric surgery research having undertaken a PhD degree in mechanisms of complications of gastric bypass surgery at Imperial College London.
