Miss Sarah Mills

Miss Sarah Mills graduated from Oxford University Medical School in 1998 and undertook surgical training in Oxford, Melbourne and London, prior to taking up a Consultant post at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. She undertook Specialist Colorectal Fellowships at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia and St Mark’s Hospital, London. In 2005, she was awarded an MD thesis for her work at St Mark’s Hospital, London, on the immunology of inflammatory bowel disease.

Miss Mills specialises in robotic minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. She also has a large practice in coloproctology including use of laser/VAAFT surgery for anal fistulae, as well as procedures for haemorrhoids, perianal skin tags and anal fissures.

She has an active interest in surgical research and has published widely in peer reviewed journals and presented work at international conferences. She was appointed an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London in 2016.

Her current research is on the field of anal cancer and she is the lead for the international anal cancer registry (mASCARA) and supervises PhD students in this field. She has a specialist multidisciplinary clinical practice in diagnosis and treatment of anogenital dysplasia and anal cancer. She is the Clinical Lead for the Chelsea Anogenital Neoplasia Service (CANS)

Her NHS practice is based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where she is the Colorectal Cancer MDT Lead at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust. She has also held the posts of National Endoscopy Training Lead (JAG) and Chair of the ACPGBI Colonoscopy Committee.

She is an experienced JAG accredited Endoscopist with a specialist practice in interventional endoscopy and cutting edge techniques for treating complex polyps and early rectal cancers in a minimally invasive fashion (TAMIS). She plays an active role in developing strategies to improve standards in Cancer Services in London through her work at the Royal Marsden Partners Cancer Alliance.

Miss Mills also has an active interest in Global Health and regularly leads and teaches courses in low and middle income countries in Africa. These include the SAFE OR course, a multidisciplinary course for theatre teams of Surgeons, Anaesthetists and Nurses focussing on using non- technical skills such as communication, leadership, situational awareness, decision making and conflict resolution to improve patient safety and outcomes.
