Mario Cibelli

Dr Mario Cibelli is a highly experienced Consultant in Pain Medicine, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine with over 25 years of specialist clinical practice. He is one of a very small number of clinicians in Europe whose expertise combines advanced pain management, interventional pain procedures, neuroscience research, anaesthesia, and intensive care medicine. He currently practises at University Hospitals Birmingham and serves as Honorary Professor in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at the Birmingham University.

Dr Cibelli completed a PhD in Neuroscience at Imperial College London and later obtained a Master's degree in Pain Management from the University of Edinburgh, providing him with a unique combination of scientific understanding and clinical expertise in pain. His research has focused on pain mechanisms, recovery after surgery, and innovative approaches to analgesia, and he has published extensively in leading international medical journals.

As an interventional pain specialist, Dr Cibelli is trained in a wide range of ultrasound-guided and fluoroscopy-guided procedures for spinal, nerve and musculoskeletal pain conditions. His practice encompasses the management of neck pain, back pain, sciatica, neuropathic pain, headache disorders, complex pain syndromes, and advanced neuromodulation treatments including spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation. 

Patient comfort and safety are central to every aspect of his practice. Drawing on his extensive anaesthetic background, Dr Cibelli is known for his gentle procedural technique and meticulous attention to detail. He takes great care to ensure patients feel informed, reassured and comfortable throughout their treatment journey. Many patients appreciate his ability to explain complex conditions clearly, helping them make confident and informed decisions about their care.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr Cibelli is an Associate Professor, he is Chair of the Pain Management and ERAS Committee of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (EACTAIC), an invited international lecturer, faculty member of the NYSORA Think-Tank (New York School of Regional Anesthesia) and faculty member of the Pain Pro Academy Masterclass, where he teaches doctors from around the world advanced pain and regional anaesthesia techniques. He has been awarded National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funding for innovative research and has pioneered new approaches to pain management.

Dr Cibelli is fully registered with the General Medical Council and holds specialist accreditation in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine.
