About

Mr Kapil Sahnan is a London-based Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with a specialist tertiary referral practice at St Mark’s Hospital, the UK’s National Bowel Hospital. His clinical interests include proctology, including laser treatment, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He co-leads the hospital’s robotic IBD surgery programme and is Director of Innovation at the St Mark’s Academic Institute. He is also actively involved in international surgical education, welcoming trainees and visiting surgeons from around the world each year. In 2025, he successfully completed the EBSQ examination in Coloproctology and was awarded Fellowship of the European Board of Surgery.

Mr Sahnan undertook both his undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at Imperial College London. His early surgical training took place in Oxford and Bristol before he progressed to higher surgical training in London, having achieved the highest national ranking for entry into the programme. He subsequently completed a highly regarded European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) fellowship in robotic colorectal cancer surgery in Barcelona, further developing his expertise in advanced minimally invasive colorectal procedures.

Alongside his clinical responsibilities, Mr Sahnan is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, where he supervises PhD students and contributes to academic training. He is also a member of the ESCP Education Committee and leads its international fellowship programme dedicated to pelvic floor disorders, including prolapse, bowel dysfunction and faecal incontinence. In addition, he organises the annual Training Village, an educational programme covering laparoscopic and robotic surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia surgery.

Mr Sahnan is actively involved in teaching proctology nationally through the ACPGBI’s National Proctology Roadshow. His teaching covers a broad range of conditions and procedures, including anal fistulas, laser proctology, anal fissures, haemorrhoids, persistent anal itching (pruritus ani), and anal lesions such as skin tags and anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN). He has also contributed to undergraduate medical education as a final-year examination examiner for students at both Imperial College London and Oxford University.

With more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, Mr Sahnan has established an international profile in colorectal surgery and is regarded as a global key opinion leader within his field. His academic contribution also includes editorial work, and he serves as an editor for the Colorectal Surgery section of Frontline Gastroenterology, the official journal of the British Society of Gastroenterologists.

His commitment to patient care has also been recognised through the iWantGreatCare Certificate of Excellence, which he received in 2023, 2024 and 2025 in recognition of consistently delivering a high standard of care.
