About
Dr. Joanne Spoors completed her medical degree at Guys and St Thomas’ medical school, graduating in 2001. Following this, she pursued psychiatric training at Guys, Kings and St Thomas’, earning membership in the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2007. Dr. Spoors further honed her skills at renowned institutions such as The Maudsley Hospital and the Winchester Mother and Baby Psychiatric Unit, before completing her general adult psychiatric training in the North East of England and Hampshire.
With over a decade of experience in perinatal psychiatry, Dr. Spoors specialises in providing comprehensive care to individuals and families during pregnancy and after childbirth. She offers consultations for those planning pregnancy, expectant mothers, and new parents, utilising evidence-based approaches and fostering collaborative decision-making for treatment plans. Additionally, Dr. Spoors provides mental health birth planning for individuals with mental health conditions or prior birth trauma.
Since 2018, Dr. Spoors has served as the Clinical Lead of the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust Perinatal Service. She holds the role of lead Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist with the Hampshire, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight, and Farnham Community Perinatal Mental Health Team. Furthermore, she contributes to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Maternal Mental Health Service, specialising in birth trauma care.
Dr. Spoors is skilled in Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) and is trained as an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist. She has a keen interest in women’s mental health, particularly exploring the impact of hormones on mood disorders such as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).
Dr. Spoors is affiliated with esteemed professional organisations including the General Medical Council, Royal College of Psychiatrists, and the Association for Video Interaction Guidance UK.
