Mr Hemanshoo Thakkar is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon practising in London. He qualified from King’s College London in 2009, graduating with four distinctions. He undertook his core and higher surgical training within the London Deanery, specialising in paediatric surgery, and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2019. Following this, he worked as a Locum Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital before being appointed as a substantive Consultant at Evelina London Children’s Hospital in 2020.
His clinical practice encompasses a broad range of general paediatric surgical conditions, with a particular focus on lower gastrointestinal and colorectal disorders. His areas of expertise include minimally invasive paediatric surgery, anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung’s disease, pilonidal sinus disease, umbilical and inguinal hernias, tongue tie division, and management of undescended testes.
Mr Thakkar has undertaken additional training in surgical leadership and was recognised as a Global Scholar in Surgical Leadership at Harvard Medical School. He has received several professional awards, including the Young Consultant of the Year award from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 2021 and the Alex Simpson Smith Travelling Fellowship Award for child health research in 2019.
Alongside his clinical responsibilities, he is actively involved in education and academic work. He serves as Educational Lead for the Paediatric Surgery Department at Evelina London Children’s Hospital and teaches undergraduate medical students at King’s College London, where he holds the title of Honorary Senior Lecturer. His research interests include anorectal malformations and pilonidal sinus disease, and he is engaged in projects aimed at service development and quality improvement. He has also developed educational podcasts in paediatric surgery to support wider access to evidence based learning resources.
