Hassan Malik is a Consultant Hepatobiliary Surgeon and Associate Professor at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he also serves as Clinical Lead for Digestive Surgery at University Hospital Aintree. He qualified in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1992, passed the FRCS examination in 1996, and was awarded an MD in 2000. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Mr Malik was appointed as a consultant surgeon in 2008 and has built an internationally recognised practice in cancer surgery, with extensive expertise in hepatobiliary surgery and retroperitoneal sarcoma. He has undertaken a very high volume of liver surgery, performing hundreds of complex liver resections, and has introduced advanced techniques within his unit, including vascular resections and transplant-based approaches to facilitate complex liver operations.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Malik has led the development of a highly active research programme with strong links to the University of Liverpool, the Liverpool CRUK Trials Unit, the MRC Centre for Drug Safety, and major oncology centres including Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Clatterbridge and The Christie. He currently supervises multiple PhD and MD candidates and has published extensively in his field, with well over a hundred peer-reviewed publications.
Mr Malik has held several senior national and international leadership roles. He is a past Chair of the National Cancer Research Network Upper GI Group, past President of the British Association of Surgical Oncology, and President-Elect of the European Society of Surgical Oncology. He also serves as an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology and remains actively involved in professional societies and collaborative cancer research networks.
