Dr Harutomo Hasegawa is a consultant neurosurgeon who provides advice and treatment for a wide range of conditions affecting the brain and spine. His expertise includes managing back pain, sciatica, disc prolapses, neck pain, brachialgia, hydrocephalus, Chiari malformations and brain tumours in both adults and children. He also has specialist expertise in epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation and paediatric neurosurgery.
He has an established NHS practice at King’s College Hospital, London, and Evelina London Children’s Hospital, where he runs clinics in adult and paediatric general neurosurgery, spinal surgery and epilepsy surgery. In addition, he manages emergency presentations in both adults and children with neurosurgical conditions such as head and spinal injuries. He is actively involved in multidisciplinary team meetings and contributes to the neurosciences risk and clinical governance team.
Dr Hasegawa aims to provide pragmatic, patient-centred care, recognising that most patients may not require surgery, while striving to deliver high-quality surgical treatment when it is necessary. His approach includes offering clear and straightforward advice, providing realistic discussions about the benefits and risks of surgery where appropriate, and ensuring access to multidisciplinary assessment similar to NHS standards when indicated. He is committed to timely communication, including prompt clinic letters shared with both patients and GPs, and facilitates onward referrals to appropriate specialists when required. He also aims to minimise routine follow-up appointments, instead offering patient-initiated follow-up where appropriate.
Born in Kyoto, Japan, he studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. He completed his neurosurgical training in London at centres including King’s College Hospital, St George’s Hospital and Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre. He later undertook fellowships in functional neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery and paediatric neurosurgery at King’s College Hospital, before being appointed as a consultant neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospital and Evelina London Children’s Hospital in 2020.
He has authored over 40 scientific papers and co-authored the textbook Oxford Case Histories in Neurosurgery. Outside of medicine, his interests include cooking and the mind-body relationship.
