Dr Fausto Morell-Ducos is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine. He graduated with honours from Leeds University medical school, where he was awarded the Willis Prize. He then trained in general internal medicine prior to commencing anaesthetics specialty training in London. During his specialty training he was awarded a Biomedical Research Centre Studentship and completed a research Master’s degree with distinction in Clinical and Experimental Medicine at University College London, as well as training anaesthetic practitioners in northern Ethiopia.
He subsequently completed an advanced pain medicine fellowship at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospitals and carried out additional training in psychiatry in North East London Foundation Trust. Alongside his private practice, Dr Morell-Ducos works at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, where he is Clinical Lead for Pain Management Services; and in the Complex Pain Team at University College Hospital, where he is Consultant Lead. He is co-Chair of the Trust’s Pain Steering Group and Opioid Stewardship Committee.
Dr Morell-Ducos has extensive experience in the management of complex pain conditions including fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, pain in patients with hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos, acute and chronic pain in sickle cell disease, and functional abdominal pain disorders. He is also highly experienced in the management of chronic pain in the presence of mood disorders, personality disorders, PTSD, autistic spectrum disorder and functional neurological disorders. He offers a range of pain interventions including facet joint/medial branch blocks, nerve blocks, epidural injections, joint radiofrequency denervation and lidocaine and ketamine infusions.
His current research interests include persistent postoperative opioid use and opioid stewardship, ketamine-assisted psychological therapy and greater occipital nerve blocks in the management of chronic migraine. He is author of a number of peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and abstracts, and has presented his work internationally.
