Ethan Troy-Barnes

Ethan Troy-Barnes is a haematology consultant specialising in inherited red blood cell disorders, with a focus on thalassaemia and sickle cell disorder. He has a special interest in blood transfusion and is actively involved in clinical research in this area.

Ethan undertook his undergraduate degree in University College Dublin before completing his specialist haematology training in North Central London. During his training, he undertook a 12-month clinical fellowship in drug development at Roche Pharmaceuticals, during which he gained valuable insights into clinical trial design and the development of new treatments for blood disorders. Ethan has a passion for teaching and developing the skills of junior doctors, nurses and other members of the team. He attained Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) at Imperial College London in 2018 for his work in medical education and was awarded Junior Doctor of the Year at UCLH’s Celebrating Excellence Awards in 2022 for his mentorship of junior doctors within the haematology department.

He has previously held national roles as regional representative for HaemSTAR and trainee representative on the London Regional Transfusion Committee. He is currently a member of the UK NEQAS Haemoglobinopathy Specialist Advisory Group and the UK Sickle Cell Disease Early Career Research Group. He has written regional guidelines for sickle cell and thalassaemia for The Red Cell Network.

Alongside his work in red blood cell disorders and transfusion medicine, Ethan provides a diagnostic haematology service for the assessment of new patients referred with a possible malignant or non-malignant blood disorder.
