Dr Ethan Troy-Barnes works as a Consultant Haematologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is also an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL Medical School. His work spans both patient care and research, with particular interest in conditions affecting red blood cells—such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia—alongside iron imbalance, irregularities in blood counts, and transfusion practice.
He achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2024, having previously been made a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2018. In recognition of his contribution as a junior doctor, he was presented with the UCLH Junior Doctor of the Year Celebrating Excellence Award in 2022.
In addition to his clinical and academic roles, he contributes to several advisory groups at both UK and international level. These include the European Haematology Association’s Specialised Working Group on Red Cells and Iron, the UK National Haemoglobinopathy Panel, and the UK NEQAS Haemoglobinopathy Specialist Advisory Group. He also participates in the UK Forum on Haemoglobin Disorders.
