Rosy Wells

Dr Rosy Wells is a Consultant in Paediatric Allergy and serves as Clinical Lead for the paediatric allergy service at St George’s Hospital in London. She has considerable experience in the assessment and treatment of allergic disease in children and leads a multidisciplinary team caring for patients with a wide range of, including complex, allergy-related conditions.

Her clinical practice is centred on providing safe, evidence-based treatment, with a strong emphasis on prevention, education and early management to achieve the best possible outcomes for children and their families.

Education and Training

Dr Wells studied Medicine at the University of Edinburgh before completing her postgraduate training in General Paediatrics in London. She later pursued specialist training in paediatric allergy, undertaking advanced clinical training and completing the RCPCH Specialist Interest (SPIN) module in Allergy.

Her academic qualifications also include a Master’s degree in Advanced Paediatrics and a Postgraduate Certificate in Allergy, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to developing both her clinical knowledge and academic expertise.

Areas of Clinical Expertise

Dr Wells treats children with a broad range of allergic and atopic conditions. Her areas of expertise include food allergy and anaphylaxis, eczema and atopic dermatitis, asthma and other allergic respiratory conditions, hay fever and allergic rhinitis, as well as eosinophilic oesophagitis and other complex atopic disorders.

She has particular experience in introducing food oral immunotherapy for young children. Working alongside Dr Perkin, she was among the first clinicians to establish this treatment within NHS services, helping to expand access to this approach for children with food allergies.

Clinical Leadership and Service Development

Since becoming Clinical Lead for Paediatric Allergy at St George’s Hospital in 2018, Dr Wells has been instrumental in strengthening and developing the service. Her work in improving the support available to children with severe allergies was recognised in 2023, when the service received the ‘Free From Hero’ award. The award acknowledged an innovative programme providing allergy emergency kits and training for schools, helping staff to respond more effectively to allergic emergencies and improve safety for affected children.

Her professional contribution extends beyond her hospital role. She serves as Co-Chair (Allergy) of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) specialty advisory committee, where she contributes to the development of national training standards and the future direction of paediatric allergy education.

Research and Academic Contributions

Dr Wells has an active interest in research and the wider development of paediatric allergy services. Together with Dr Perkin, she co-authored a national UK survey investigating the availability and capacity of allergy services across the country.

Her academic work reflects her interest in addressing wider challenges within healthcare and ensuring that research findings can be effectively applied to improve the delivery of clinical services and patient care.

Teaching and Professional Involvement

Alongside her clinical and leadership responsibilities, Dr Wells is committed to teaching and professional education. She contributes to postgraduate training in paediatrics and allergy and supports the development of doctors who are progressing towards specialist careers. Her involvement with national training organisations and regional allergy networks allows her to contribute to education and service development beyond her own clinical practice.

Approach to Patient Care

Dr Wells combines her specialist medical knowledge with a personal understanding of the challenges faced by families living with allergic disease. As a parent of children with allergic conditions herself, she has insight into both the practical demands and emotional impact that allergies can have on children and their families.

She is recognised for her calm and reassuring approach and places great importance on helping families understand their child’s condition. By providing clear information, practical advice and appropriate support, she aims to give parents and children the knowledge and confidence they need to manage allergic disease safely in everyday life.
