Rajiv Jalan

Professor Rajiv Jalan is a leading consultant hepatologist with more than 30 years of experience. Professor Jalan has been a professor of hepatology at University College London since 2000 and has lead research on multiple areas of liver disease, and is at the forefront of research into liver failure.

Recently Professor Jalan was part of a team who invented the DIALIVE - a new liver dialysis system being trialled at the Royal Free Hospital where he is a consultant hepatologist and head of the liver failure laboratory. This new device removes toxins in the liver that cause liver failure and may even have the potential to allow liver regeneration, avoiding the need for liver transplantation.

Professor Jalan is involved in a leadership capacity with developing national guidelines and setting standards of care. He was elected Secretary of the British Association for the Study of Liver diseases in 2009. He liaises closely with both the Department of Health and the Department of Transport in organising liver disease services and developing statutes for driving in liver disease patients, respectively. He is also an international leader in ACLF research.

Together with his team, Professor Jalan looks to improve the lives of people with liver disease by developing new methods of diagnosis and treatment.
