After basic degrees at the University of Dundee, Dr Al-Aloul completed specialist training in the Mersey Deanery and was appointed consultant respiratory physician at Wythenshawe Hospital (MFT) in 2005 where he was the lead lung transplant physician until 2024 following which his NHS practice moved to Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr Al-Aloul founded the Association of Lung Transplant Physicians UK in 2006 and provided an advisory role to NHS England and NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to standardise lung transplant candidate eligibility criteria and the national referral pathways. He represented Manchester on the Cardiothoracic Advisory Group of NHSBT and led the national Lung Allocation Working Group 2012-2017. As a key opinion leader in this field, he has presented his work at several national fora and to various patient advocacy groups.
Dr Al-Aloul maintained a busy work load in general respiratory medicine for over 20 years. He is a highly skilled bronchoscopist who has performed over 8000 procedures including transbronchial biopsy, airway dilatation and stenting and endobronchial valve insertion for lung volume reduction in emphysema. He is a recognised FUSIC ultrasound trainer and examiner. Having led the pleural service between 2011-15, he is skilled in all pleural procedures. He was a core member of the lung cancer and mesothelioma MDTs.
He served as a Medical Examiner at MFT between 2020-22 leading morbidity and mortality reviews.
