Dr Margarita Burmester is a Consultant Paediatrician at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS, where she is Director of Paediatric Intensive Care, and she sees patients privately, including at The Portland Hospital, 77 Wimpole Street and the Bright Futures programme at the Chiswick Medical Centre. Dr Burmester is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. She is an expert in critical care in children, including cardiac intensive care, child health education, health screening and surveillance and preventative care.
Dr Burmester has worked at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, Canada, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, and Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard University, USA. She completed postgraduate certification in clinical education in 2016 and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority and member of the Academy of Medical Educators. She is passionate about preventing ill health, and is co-founder and director of the UK Bright Futures programme, an extensive all-encompassing health surveillance and screening programme based on the American Academy of Pediatrics model.
She has published multiple articles, delivered numerous lectures and workshops, and is a co-recipient of a Wellcome Trust award. She also contributes to national strategy through advising the national paediatric critical care clinical reference group and in her role as vice president of the Paediatric Intensive care society (PICS). Dr Burmester has been president of the paediatric section of the Royal Society of Medicine since 2018.
