Dr. Kevin Shields is a Consultant Neurologist with particular expertise in the management of headache disorders. He is also qualified in neurophysiology, a separate diagnostic specialty that studies the electrical activity of the nervous system. Dr. Shields graduated first in his class at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1997 and was awarded the Hudson Gold medal. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 1999 before moving to the National for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London to begin neurology training. While there, he trained for several years under Professor Peter J Goadsby, a leading expert in headache disorder. Dr. Shields was awarded a PhD for his research into mechanisms of pain transmission in headache from the University of London in 2005. He received the Sir Charles Symonds Prize from the Association of Neurologists and the Lord Adrian Prize from the British Society of Clinical Neurophysiology for his research. Dr. Shields has also been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and books. His expertise includes neurophysiology, electromyography (EMG), electroencephalogram (EEG), headache/migraine, epilepsy, and hyperhidrosis.
