James is a consultant oncologist specialising in bowel, pancreatic, and liver cancers, as well as other cancers that have spread to the liver, lungs, lymph nodes, bones or spine. He has 20 years’ experience in cancer medicine, using drug treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted cancer drugs alongside advanced radiotherapy techniques-- including highly focused SABR treatment and MRI-guided radiotherapy.
James’ approach is straightforward and supportive. He explains each option clearly: what it aims to do, how it will affect you, and how the different treatments may fit together. He works closely with surgeons and other specialists as part of our experienced multi-disciplinary team to create a joined-up plan.
Dr Good is actively involved in national and international clinical trials, so can advise on newer evidence-based options as well as established treatments, including whether genomic testing of the cancer may be helpful.
Many patients come to James for a second opinion when they want reassurance that every suitable option has been considered. This is especially common when cancer has spread, treatment options are uncertain or not straightforward, the cancer has returned after previous treatment, or when surgery, drug treatment and radiotherapy need to be carefully coordinated.
The main areas of Dr James Good’s private practice are:
Bowel cancer treatment and second opinions
People with newly diagnosed bowel or rectal cancer, whether confined to the bowel or spread to other organs, need rapid access to a carefully coordinated plan. James provides chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted cancer drugs, radiotherapy and SABR, as well as testing the cancer for genetic changes that may affect treatment choices. He will also discuss lifestyle measures that may help you tolerate treatment, preserve quality of life and get the best possible outcome.
SABR and MRI-guided radiotherapy
Dr Good has nationally leading expertise in using highly focused radiotherapy to treat a small number of cancer deposits, including difficult-to-treat areas and cancer that has come back after previous radiotherapy. He sees patients from across the UK and with all types of secondary cancer, including those with breast, prostate, lung, skin and other cancers as well as gastrointestinal cancer, where SABR may be appropriate.
Pancreatic cancer treatment strategy
James pioneered the use of high-dose MRI-guided radiotherapy alongside chemotherapy for people with pancreatic cancer in the UK, including cancers that cannot currently be removed by surgery and tumours that have spread to other parts of the body.
Liver and bile duct cancer treatment strategy
James sees patients who need advice about how best to combine drug treatment, radiotherapy, surgery, ablation, specialist liver treatments or clinical trials.
Alongside his NHS consultant role at University Hospitals Birmingham, Dr Good is Clinical Director for Stereotactic and MRI-guided Radiotherapy at GenesisCare, a leading UK private provider of advanced radiotherapy.
James’ goal is to help you and your family make cancer treatment decisions with confidence, through clear information, expert guidance and a unique range of expertise.
