About

Dr Christos Toumpanakis is a highly accomplished Consultant Gastroenterologist with a specialist focus on Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs). He has been a Consultant at the Neuroendocrine Tumour Unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London since 2007 and is also an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London (UCL).

Dr Toumpanakis graduated from the Medical School at the University of Athens in 1994, obtained his specialist qualification in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2004, and completed his PhD at the University of Athens in 2007. He leads a dedicated NET Clinical Research Group at the Royal Free, actively involving junior doctors and UCL medical students in clinical research projects. His main research interests include novel biomarkers in NETs, molecular imaging, and carcinoid heart disease.

In 2014, Dr Toumpanakis organised the first International Conference on Carcinoid Heart Disease in London. This landmark meeting led to the creation of an international expert network that went on to publish the world’s first international management guidelines for Carcinoid Heart Disease in 2017.

Alongside his specialist NET practice, Dr Toumpanakis manages a full range of general gastrointestinal conditions, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, coeliac disease, chronic diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal complications in patients with congenital immunodeficiencies. He has been actively involved in the field of neuroendocrine tumours since 2000 and is widely recognised internationally as a leading authority in this area.

Dr Toumpanakis is a regular invited speaker at national and international conferences and has published more than 100 original research papers and reviews. He holds several prominent leadership and editorial roles, including Chair of the Advisory Board of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS), co-Chair of the ENETS Postgraduate Course, co-Editor of the ENETS Continuing Medical Education programme, and associate editor of the Journal of Neuroendocrinology. He is also a co-author of UK, Ireland, and European NET Society guidelines and serves on the advisory board of the UK NET Patient Foundation.
