Dr Andrew Barlow is a Consultant Physician specialising in respiratory medicine and general internal medicine, with wide-ranging experience in managing diverse respiratory conditions. He consults privately at Spire Bushey Hospital and The Wellington Hospital, and has been a Consultant at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since May 2005.
He graduated with honours in medicine from Sheffield University Medical School in 1996, having previously completed a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology at the Victoria University of Manchester. He later obtained a Master’s degree from Imperial College London in 2006 and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2009.
Dr Barlow’s clinical expertise covers complex airway disorders, lung cancer, respiratory failure, infections, pleural disease, sleep-related conditions, and respiratory allergies. He was among the early adopters in the UK of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), establishing the first EBUS service within the Mount Vernon Cancer Network at Harefield Hospital before further developing the service at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is also certified in thoracic ultrasound by the European Respiratory Society (ERS).
In addition to his clinical work, he is actively engaged in research and service development. He regularly presents at international conferences and has authored and co-authored numerous publications, including work on COVID-19, asthma, lung cancer, EBUS, and autoimmune diseases.
Dr Barlow is known for his patient-focused approach, carefully tailoring treatment plans to meet the individual needs and circumstances of each patient.
