About

Dr Douglas Brand is a consultant clinical oncologist based at the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre, specialising in the non-surgical management of gastrointestinal malignancies. His clinical practice includes radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy for cancers affecting the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, bile ducts, colon, rectum and anus.

He completed his medical degree at the University of Cambridge, graduating with distinction, before undertaking specialist training in clinical oncology across several leading cancer centres, including The Christie Hospital, The Royal Marsden and University College Hospital. His clinical focus includes combined treatment strategies, particularly total neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer, and he serves as the radiotherapy lead at UCLH for the ARTEMIS study investigating this approach.

Dr Brand has specialist experience in advanced radiotherapy techniques, including stereotactic body radiotherapy and proton beam therapy, which are used in the treatment of both primary and metastatic liver and pancreatic cancers with the aim of limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Brand maintains an active academic profile. He holds a Master’s degree in radiotherapy innovation and completed a doctoral degree in machine learning for outcome prediction at the Institute of Cancer Research. He subsequently held a Clinical Lectureship at University College London, continuing research into artificial intelligence–based outcome modelling and proton therapy. He currently acts as principal investigator at UCLH for the PROTIEUS trial, which is evaluating the role of proton therapy in oesophageal cancer.
