Miss Deborah Foong is a highly regarded Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon based in Birmingham, with a career focused on complex reconstruction following cancer treatment and trauma. Her expertise is sought after at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust, where she specialises in soft tissue reconstruction.
Within her NHS practice, Miss Foong serves as the principal plastic surgical reconstructive surgeon at the Birmingham Sarcoma Unit, where she manages intricate cases of soft tissue reconstruction following cancer treatment. Additionally, she plays a pivotal role in the management of complex extremity trauma at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
A core aspect of Miss Foong's practice revolves around amputee surgery, and she is a key member of two specialist multidisciplinary amputee clinics. Her work involves various aspects of amputation surgery, including refashioning of amputation stumps and advanced nerve surgeries such as targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) surgery. Notably, she leads the team performing osseointegration surgery for British Veterans at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham.
Miss Foong's journey in medicine began with undergraduate medical training at the University of Nottingham, where she graduated in 2003. She underwent extensive training in the West Midlands and Manchester before completing her Higher Surgical Training in Nottingham. In recognition of her expertise, she was conferred with the Specialty Fellowship of the Royal College Of Surgeons in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (FRCS (Plast)) in 2017.
Prior to her appointment as a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Miss Foong pursued fellowships in Microsurgical Reconstruction in Nottingham and Hand Surgery at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, Derby. Additionally, she has contributed to the field as a member of the Joint Committee of Intercollegiate Examinations FRCS (Plast) MCQ Writing Group since 2020. Her dedication to patient care, coupled with her extensive training and expertise, positions her as a leader in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
