Mr David Baxter is an experienced Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon practising at The Wellington Hospital as part of the specialist spinal unit. He is nationally recognised for his expertise in full endoscopic spinal surgery, alongside the management of complex spinal conditions including degenerative spinal disease, spinal cord injury and neuromodulation.
Mr Baxter provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of adult spinal conditions, managing referrals from across the UK. His particular areas of expertise include endoscopic cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgery, endoscopic fusion surgery, spinal stenosis, disc disease, myelopathy, radiculopathy, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, spinal trauma, adult spinal deformity, chronic neck and back pain, and coccydynia. He delivers both elective and emergency spinal surgery and is known for his minimally invasive, tissue-preserving approach aimed at faster recovery and reduced postoperative pain.
He trained extensively in London and completed a Neurotrauma Fellowship at a major London teaching hospital, followed by a paediatric and adult spinal deformity fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. These fellowships underpin his specialist expertise in complex spinal pathology.
Mr Baxter adopts a patient-centred, evidence-based approach, prioritising education, shared decision-making and non-surgical treatments wherever appropriate. When surgery is required, he utilises full endoscopic spinal techniques, advanced image-guided and navigated spinal surgery to deliver precise, minimally invasive care.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Baxter is an Associate Professor at University College London, where he leads research into spinal cord injury, neuromodulation and advanced technologies in spinal surgery. He is principal investigator on multiple clinical trials, including pioneering work in spinal cord neuromodulation to restore bladder and bowel function, and collaborates on national research programmes in scoliosis and spinal surgery outcomes. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.
