Dr Ahmed Albusoda is a consultant physician specialising in disorders of the digestive system. He received world-class training in gastroenterology, endoscopy, and digestive ultrasound, and was part of the prestigious Marie Curie Training Network in neurogastroenterology (NEUROGUT). This €3.7 million European Commission–funded programme was designed to develop the next generation of leaders in the field. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Qasim Aziz, focusing on digestive pain. His doctoral thesis, “Central Modulation of Visceral Pain Hypersensitivity,” was awarded by the University of London.
Dr Albusoda undertook extensive specialist training in neurogastroenterology, making him highly experienced in managing complex and painful digestive conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, constipation, diarrhoea, and swallowing difficulties.
He performs a high volume of endoscopic procedures of the oesophagus, stomach, and colon each year. This experience has enabled him to refine his technique to deliver thorough, high-quality examinations while minimising patient discomfort. He also uses innovative approaches such as transnasal endoscopy and underwater colonoscopy to further improve patient comfort.
He has a strong interest in digestive ultrasound. During his training in Europe, he gained expertise in advanced abdominal ultrasound and believes it is an essential part of the clinical examination in a specialist gastroenterology setting. The ability to provide real-time imaging of the the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and other abdominal organs enhances diagnostic accuracy, saves time, and improves the patient experience. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate (with Merit) in General Medical Ultrasound from King’s College London.
Dr Albusoda has held a substantive consultant post at Barts Health NHS Trust since 2018, working across The Royal London and Whipps Cross hospitals.
Alongside his clinical work, he remains actively involved in teaching and research. He holds an Honorary Senior Clinical Lectureship at Queen Mary University of London at The Wingate Institute for Neurogastroenterology, Barts and The London School of Medicine.
