About

  • Biography icon plus

Mr Barton-Smith's specialty is complex robotic and minimally invasive and surgery for benign gynaecological conditions mainly related to pelvic pain and subfertility related to endometriosis but also including uterine fibroids and abnormal bleeding.

He completed a four-year fellowship at the MATTU, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford from 2004-2008. He was then appointed there as a Consultant in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery from 2009-2012. He moved to Singapore to be Chief of the Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Section in the O&G Dept at SGH in 2013. In 2016 he returned to the UK and is currently practising at Princess Grace Hospital in London.

Mr Barton-Smith trained in the use of the da Vinci™ robotic surgical system following a period as a Visiting Consultant in the USA at the North Texas Hospital in Dallas in 2008. He then established the leading UK robotic gynaecological surgery programme at the Royal Surrey and has performed over 400 procedures making him the most experienced gynaecologist in robotic surgery in the UK. He was the only Epicenter Surgeon in the UK accredited to train gynaecologists in robotic surgery until recently. Also he was the most experienced robotic gynaecology surgeon in Singapore, and from 2013-2015 performed more robotic cases than any other surgeon in any specialty in the SE Asia region.

He performs a broad range of complex procedures robotically or laparoscopically including Excision of Severe Endometriosis, Hysterectomy and Myomectomy. He also performs operative hysteroscopic procedures for polyps, fibroids, endometrial resection and uterine septae.

Mr Barton-Smith’s main interest is Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain for which he has a Doctorate Degree from the University of Surrey in the UK. As a Consultant at the Royal Surrey he saw national referrals of complex endometriosis cases sent from other gynaecologists around the UK and has pioneered the use of robotic surgery for this most challenging of gynaecological surgical procedures. In Singapore, where this problem is more common, he had a similar busy service for the excision of severe endometriosis in complicated cases. He has performed over 125 cases for severe Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis robotically, one of the largest series worldwide.

Mr Barton-Smith was a Founding Member of BIARGS (British and Irish Association of Robotic Gynaecological Surgeons) and was President from 2014-2017. He organized the first UK National Gynaecological Robotic Meeting at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG) in 2010.

He was also Vice President of SERGS (Society of European Robotic Gynaecological Surgeons) and was conference co-organiser for the Annual SERGS International Meeting in London in 2013.

He was a co-organiser of the RCOG UK national theory course for laparoscopic surgery from 2006-2012, a Faculty member of the European Surgical Institute, and has taught and been an invited speaker on robotics and laparoscopic surgery around the globe including in the USA, Belgium, Germany, France, Turkey, Greece, Ireland, India, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Mr Barton-Smith has successfully performed over 2800 logged operative endoscopic procedures in the last 12 years with a low complication rate including over 400 robotic cases.
