Mr Tom Routledge

Consultant Thoracic Surgeon, HCA Healthcare UK

Mr Tom Routledge is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at HCA Healthcare UK and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He is internationally recognised for his leadership in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery and has been at the forefront of both introducing advanced robotic techniques for lung cancer treatment in the UK and training other surgeons to perform robotically assisted surgery.

At London Bridge Hospital, he has led the adoption of single port robotic thoracic surgery, enabling highly precise procedures with reduced recovery times and improved patient experience. He has also been a key member of the team to introduce the ION - a first in Europe - offering robotic assisted lung biopsy to patients.

In his session, Tom will be exploring the robotic surgical innovations that are shaping modern cancer care, and the increasing use of robotic surgery as an enabler for improved cancer outcomes.

Robotic surgical innovations in cancer care

Key takeaways

  • Robotic surgery offers more rapid functional recovery = more rapid return to work, and fewer expensive downstream complications.
  • To actualise the clinical and cost benefits, a high volume specialist team, with the right infrastructure, and high-volume individual surgeons are needed.
  • In line with the NHS Cancer   plan, robotics is an enabler of better cancer outcomes and will become routine for many cancer surgeries.
