Private neurology treatment

Neurology is a specialist branch of medicine which focuses on the nervous system. This includes the diagnosis, management and non-surgical treatment of conditions that affect your brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Neurological disorders can limit your body’s ability to function correctly, causing symptoms that range from headache or memory loss, to a lack of sensation or control of a limb.

Our neurologists work closely with leading consultants across a range of specialties, giving you personalised care, whatever your condition. Common neurological problems we treat include strokes, headaches, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, peripheral neuropathy and neuromuscular diseases.

Your sense of smell, vision, hearing and balance can also be affected by a neurological condition, which is why we take a multidisciplinary approach towards your care, giving you peace of mind as we look after every aspect of your wellbeing.

Paediatric neurology

HCA UK's paediatric neurology unit at The Portland Hospital combines highly advanced medical technology with leading paediatric consultants, treating an array of conditions from headaches, to cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

From diagnosis through to groundbreaking treatments, our multidisciplinary teams are there 24/7 to care for your loved ones.

Neurological symptoms

Most patients who wish to see a neurologist will be experiencing one or a number of common neurological symptoms. These include:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • visual problems
  • weakness
  • balance problems
  • blackouts
  • fatigue
  • tingling
  • speech and hearing problems

Identifying and treating neurological problems

Slight symptoms that occur initially can sometimes lead to a diagnosis of serious conditions such as brain tumours, multiple sclerosis (MS), acute facial pain, motor neurone disease (MND), Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy

You can be assured that your specialist will develop an ongoing care plan to help you live as proactive a life as possible. This will include regular assessment of your medicine, surgical options and creating a rehabilitation programme for you.

Parkinson's disease

Medicines and some surgical options can help alleviate the symptoms of tremor, slow movement and stiff or inflexible muscles.

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

At London Bridge Hospital we offer stem cell treatment for patients with MS for whom first line therapies have not worked.

Quick treatment of a stroke is essential. Strokes caused by blood clots (ischaemic) are usually treated with medication, such as statins and anti-coagulants. Strokes caused by bleeding on the brain (haemorrhagic) are also treated with medicine and sometimes surgery.

Your neurologist might recommend an electroencephalogram (EEG) brain wave test to diagnose your condition. Epilepsy can be managed by a variety of medicines, under the ongoing supervision of your neurologist.

World-class neurology consultants

Our leading consultant neurologists work together across each of our hospitals. They  specialise in the most common areas of neurology, managing conditions such as Parkinson’s, stroke, epilepsy, muscle wasting diseases and multiple sclerosis.

To ensure consistency and continuity of care, we offer all patients access to the same consultant you have seen from the start of your journey, from diagnosis and throughout your treatment.

The latest equipment and expert diagnosis

Our technicians, physiologists, reporting clinicians and consultant radiologists are all specialists in their field — using the latest technology to get the most accurate and precise diagnosis possible.

To make sure we find the correct diagnosis first time, we use MRI and CT scans. We also use electrophysiology tests to measure nerve conduction, assessing electrical patterns in the muscle and weakness to brain wave recordings in patients with epilepsy.

Access to the latest thinking

Many of our neurologists are involved in major clinical trials and research studies, so if you have a chronic neurological condition and you know there isn’t at present a cure, be assured you’re getting access to the latest thinking and expert opinions about your condition.

Neurology aftercare and rehabilitation

We offer acute neurological rehabilitation programmes for patients experiencing a range of neurological conditions, in our specialist centres at The Wellington Hospital for adults, and for children at The Portland Hospital.

From the moment a patient arrives with us they are supported by our dedicated team of rehabilitation specialists. The way we come together as a team of experts is key to the high quality of care we offer. We bring together experts from a range of specialisms to work together as an interdisciplinary team around the patient’s rehabilitation needs. Each personalised team may include consultants, specialist nurses, neurophysiotherapists, neuropsychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and many more.
