Private Ovarian Cyst Surgery
Ovarian cysts can develop on one or both ovaries — if they split, they can lead to problematic symptoms
About
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop on or around your ovaries. Sometimes, these cysts can split, grow too big or block the blood supply to the ovaries. If this happens, we can carry out a laparoscopic cystectomy to remove the cyst, whilst preserving your ability to have babies.
Need to know
A laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is carried out under general anaesthetic, which means you'll be asleep. Your consultant surgeon will make a few cuts in your abdomen. They'll then insert a laparoscope (a thin telescope with a light on it) through these cuts to examine your ovaries. Your consultant will then make a larger cut above your pubic line. They'll use the larger opening to remove the cyst. Samples of the cyst may be sent for analysis to check it for cancer.
Your consultant surgeon will explain the procedure to you during a pre-surgery screening, which will most likely take place on a date before the procedure. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. These will be explained to you. As you'll be receiving a general anaesthetic, it's likely you'll be asked to limit your food and drink intake in the hours leading up to your surgery. You may also be asked to put on special tights to prevent blood clots during the surgery.
You may be able to go home on the day of your procedure or one or two days after. In any case, you may need to ask someone to pick you up. You may experience abdominal pain for up to 10 days after your procedure. Your consultant surgeon or specialist nurse will make sure you go home with the right level of pain medication. They'll also explain how to care for your wounds. You'll receive a date for a follow-up appointment. If your cyst has been sent away for analysis, your consultant will give you the results during your follow-up.
