CLINICAL SPECIALTIES

Directing you to the specialist care you need
Our highly experienced ophthalmologists and multidisciplinary teams at The Wilmslow Hospital have expertise in a range of eye conditions, including:

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

A common sight-loss condition that changes the central part of your retina, called the macular.

Astigmatism

A common vision condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, leading to blurred or distorted vision at any distance.

Blepharitis

Inflammation of the eyelids, typically causing redness, irritation, itching, and crusting around the eyelashes.

Cataracts

A common eye condition where the lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision and, if untreated, potential vision loss.

Diabetic retinopathy

A complication of diabetes that can damage the retina.

Glaucoma

A disorder that causes damage to the optic nerve, the nerve that carries information from the eye to the brain.

Keratoconus

An eye condition where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape, causing distorted vision and sensitivity to light.

Lazy eye (amblyopia)

A vision disorder where one eye doesn't see as clearly as the other, often due to poor communication between the eye and brain.

Pink eye (conjunctivitis)

Inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, causing redness, itching, and discharge in the eyes.

Refractive errors

We can help patients who no longer want to wear their glasses or contact lenses.

PRIVATE OPHTHALMOLOGY SERVICES

Exceptional treatment and care
This is only a selection of the treatment options we have available at The Wilmslow Hospital. Other treatments are available depending on your individual needs. Your consultant will advise on the most effective treatment option for your condition.

Cataract surgery

Replacing the clouded lens in your eye with an artificial one.

Multifocal intraocular lens

An artificial lens implanted in the eye, usually after cataract surgery, that provides vision correction at multiple distances.

Toric lens implants

Special lenses used during cataract surgery to correct astigmatism, helping to improve vision by addressing the eye's irregular shape.

Laser Eye Surgery (LASIK/PRK/LASEK)

A procedure that uses a laser to reshape the cornea, correcting vision issues such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

Implantable contact lens (ICL)

A surgically inserted lens, often used to correct vision issues like myopia. An alternative to LASIK for people who may not be candidates for laser eye surgery.

Retinal imaging

A non-invasive diagnostic technique used to capture detailed images of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

Oculoplastic surgery

We offer procedures such as blepharoplasty to treat lumps and bumps on the eyelids, or droopy lids.

What to expect
From the moment you step through the door, we want you to feel as comfortable and reassured as possible. One of the ways we can put you at ease is to let you know what to expect at each stage of your diagnostic and treatment process.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here or in the FAQs below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our team will be happy to help in any way they can.

01

Initial consultation

Whether you’ve self-referred or have a referral from a GP, the first step will be a consultation with one of our ophthalmologists for a comprehensive eye examination and medical history review.

02

Tests and scans

Depending on your symptoms, your consultant may request further diagnostic tests and investigations to get a clear understanding of your condition. This may include visual field testing, intraocular pressure tests, retinal scans, specular microscopy, pupillometry, corneal topography or biometry – all depending on condition.

Wherever possible, we’ll aim to complete these tests during your initial visit. If this isn’t possible, we’ll schedule a follow up visit at your convenience.

03

Treatment and management

Once they’ve confirmed a diagnosis, our specialists will discuss the findings with you and create a comprehensive treatment plan, with options that are fully personalised for your needs.

Depending on your condition, this may include medication, minor procedures in clinic such as injections or laser treatment, or even day-case surgery for cataracts, glaucoma, refractive or lid surgery. We will always carry out pre-operative assessments before any surgery goes ahead so you’ll have a chance to prepare.

04

Follow up and ongoing care

Our multidisciplinary specialists are here to support you throughout your recovery, ensuring you’re comfortable with your treatment and care at every stage.

An ophthalmologist is a specialist consultant who treats a range of eye and vision conditions. they can prescribe medication and offer medical and surgical interventions.

An optometrist examines the eye and can diagnose and correct vision problems with specs and contact lenses. Although they can treat minor eye conditions they cannot offer more complex treatment or care.
For most of our private ophthalmology services, we operate by appointment only to ensure timely and efficient care.
If your treatment is going to be covered by private medical insurance, we'll need your insurance member number and authorisation code, so you'll need to have them to hand along with your referral letter.
While we may not always have same-day availability for private ophthalmology, we can often confirm an appointment in as little as 24 hours, depending on consultant schedules. We aim to offer quick access to care, especially if your symptoms are urgent or causing discomfort.

I’m so grateful to Mr Quah, who helped me narrow down what I wanted to achieve from the surgery, understand the risks involved and weigh up my options. He delivered on everything we thought was possible and the results are simply life changing for me.
