Diagnostic imaging
MRI scan
An MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create clear, detailed images of the inside of your body, including your head, hips and breasts. It helps your consultant make an accurate diagnosis. Scans usually take 15-90 minutes depending on the area being examined. On the day, our team will explain each step and answer your questions, so you feel comfortable and supported throughout.
Ultrasound
An ultrasound is a quick, non-invasive scan that uses sound waves to create images of your organs, tissues and blood flow. It’s widely used in specialties such as orthopaedics, gastroenterology, cardiology, gynaecology and urology. With no radiation and no recovery time, it’s a quick and convenient procedure to help plan your care.
Mammogram (2D and 3D)
A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to take detailed images of your breasts, helping to spot changes or signs of breast cancer at the earliest stage. At The Wilmslow, we use advanced 2D and 3D technology for even greater accuracy. We’ll X-ray each breast twice from different angles, while making the process as comfortable as possible. Mammograms can form part of routine screening or be carried out in our one-stop breast clinic.
Digital fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a moving X-ray that shows real-time images of the inside of your body. It’s often used to investigate the gastrointestinal tract or to support orthopaedic and urological surgery. Depending on the procedure, fluoroscopy can take between 10 and 45 minutes. We’ll talk you through the procedure beforehand to make sure you know what to expect and feel at ease throughout.

Blood tests are a simple, effective way to check your health. They can help diagnose conditions, monitor ongoing issues and give your consultant a clear picture of what’s happening inside your body. PET-CT
A PET-CT combines two advanced techniques – PET (positron emission tomography) and CT (computed tomography) – in one scan. Using low-dose radiation, PET-CT allows us to see how your cells are functioning, while giving us detailed 2D and 3D images of your body that help to guide the most effective treatment plan for you.
Cardiac diagnostic tests
ECG
An ECG is a quick, non-invasive test that records the rate, rhythm and electrical activity of your heart. It can help diagnose or monitor conditions such as an abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia) and check how well medication is working. Often part of a routine check-up, it’s a simple way to make sure your heart is functioning as it should.
Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram, or ‘echo’, is an ultrasound scan that creates moving images of your heart. It shows how your heart and valves are working, helping us assess structure, function and blood flow. This safe, non-invasive test offers valuable insights into your heart health.
Cardiac stress test
A cardiac stress test shows how your heart performs under exercise. While you walk on a treadmill at a controlled speed and incline, we monitor your heart rate and blood pressure. This helps identify issues that may not appear when your body is at rest, providing a clearer picture of your heart health.
Angiogram
An angiogram, also called a cardiac catheterisation, allows us to look closely at your heart’s arteries. Using imaging, the test allows us to see whether there are blockages or narrowing of the arteries and how well your heart’s working. This information is essential for planning the most effective treatment should we detect any problems.
Sphygmocor pulse pressure monitoring
This test measures blood pressure and arterial stiffness, both important indicators of heart and vascular health. It can highlight risks such as high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke. By detecting these issues early, we can help you take proactive steps to protect your long-term health.
Endoscopy diagnostic tests
Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy allows your consultant to examine the inside of your uterus and cervix using a thin, flexible camera. This quick outpatient procedure helps diagnose causes of irregular bleeding or other gynaecological symptoms, so you can get clarity and move forward with the right care.
Cystoscopy
A cystoscopy is used to examine the inside of your bladder and urethra. It helps identify the cause of infections, bleeding, incontinence or other urinary symptoms. Usually carried out as a day case, the procedure gives us essential information to help guide effective treatment.
Colposcopy
During a colposcopy, your consultant will use a microscope to examine your cervix in detail. The procedure is often recommended if a cervical screening test shows abnormal cells, and allows any changes to be identified early and, if needed, treated quickly.
Knee and ankle arthroscopy
An arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that lets your consultant see inside your knee or ankle joint with a small camera. Through tiny incisions, we can diagnose and often treat issues such as torn cartilage, ligament injuries and arthritis, without open surgery, supporting faster recovery.
Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy uses a thin, flexible camera (endoscope) to examine your oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). It helps us to diagnose the cause of symptoms such as pain, indigestion or difficulty swallowing, giving clear images to guide the most effective treatment.
Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy allows your consultant to look at the inside of your bowel using a flexible endoscope. You may be referred if you’ve noticed blood in your stool or a change in your bowel habits. This test gives a detailed view of your bowel, helping to identify or rule out underlying causes.
Bronchoscopy
A bronchoscopy uses a fine, flexible camera to examine your trachea and airways. We may recommend it to investigate a persistent cough, collect samples of mucus or check for infection. The procedure can give us important information about your lung health, supporting faster, more accurate treatment.
Biopsy
Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy
A minimally invasive procedure that removes a small tissue sample to check for signs of disease.
Liver biopsy
A procedure where a small sample of tissue is removed from your liver, for study under a microscope. You may have a liver biopsy if blood tests or scans indicate you may have a liver condition. The results can help determine the nature and severity of liver disease. On top of diagnosis, biopsy findings also help guide treatment decisions, and disease monitoring and management.

Your consultant will take the time to understand your concerns and medical history, and carry out a thorough examination. They’ll discuss with you which tests or scans are most appropriate to reach an accurate diagnosis, keeping you fully informed and supported throughout.

Depending on your specific circumstances, your consultant may perform some tests, such as an ultrasound, while specialist radiologists or senior radiographers will handle others. We conduct tests here at The Wilmslow Hospital or, when needed, at The Christie Private Care, carefully coordinating your care so that any transfers are seamless.

Results and next steps
Our expert radiologists review and report all results, which your consultant will receive within days. They’ll then meet with you to explain the findings, answer any questions you may have, and guide you confidently toward the next steps in your care.

While you’ll need a completed request form to access all our imaging services, this can come from a GP rather than consultant. If you have any questions, just get in touch. A member of our team will be happy to help you get the support you need.
Yes, we do. If don’t have private health insurance but want to access our imaging services, you can self-pay. Our team can provide you with a quote in advance, so you have complete financial transparency before you decide to go ahead. You can often be seen in as little as 24 hours.
Yes, they will. Once your scan has been reviewed by a specialist radiologist, the results will be sent to your consultant or referring GP. They’ll explain what the findings mean and talk you through any next steps.
