YOUR CANCER CARE AT HCA UK

What to expect

Throughout your treatment and care our team will be available to support you in every way they can.

Knowing what to expect at each stage of your treatment can help you feel more at ease. If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, or in the FAQs section below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

It’s important to remember that no two people are the same, and your experience may differ. However, the following steps offer a general guide to what you can expect.

01

Your first consultation

You’ll be able to choose a consultant who specialises in your specific diagnosis, including rare or complex cancers. They’ll lead your treatment, supported by a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). If you’re unsure who to see, we can help you choose the right consultant for you.

02

Your multidisciplinary team

Your consultant will discuss your diagnosis with a multidisciplinary team. This means you benefit from the expertise of cancer specialists from across our wider network. Together, they’ll review your diagnosis to ensure your recommended treatment plan is the most effective for your needs.

03

Your recommended treatment plan

After the multidisciplinary team has reviewed your diagnosis, your consultant will discuss their recommended treatment and care plan with you. You’ll have clear information, time to reflect, and the opportunity to ask questions.

04

During treatment

Throughout your treatment, you’ll be cared for by your consultant, clinical nurse specialist and the wider clinical and support teams. Whether you need help managing side effects, emotional support or practical advice, we’re here to make each stage as manageable and comfortable as possible – for you and your loved ones.

05

After treatment

Your care doesn’t end when your treatment does. We provide follow-up appointments, physical rehabilitation, wellbeing support and access to therapies that help you adjust after cancer treatment. Our team will be here for you, offering guidance and follow-up support as needed.

Simply contact your insurer with your referral details, and they’ll confirm what’s covered under your policy.

A cancer diagnosis can have a significant impact on you and those close to you. Alongside your treatment plan, we offer emotional, physical and practical support throughout your care.

Our expert teams will provide you with the help that’s right for you at the time that’s right for you. Whether that’s support with the psychological impact of your diagnosis, or with the physical impacts of treatment, either during your treatment or with the longer-term effects it may cause. We can support you with everything, including diet and exercise, body image and intimate relationships, psychological support, spirituality and managing the side effects of your treatment.

Yes. You can ask for a second opinion at any stage of your cancer diagnosis and treatment. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed with cancer, have a recommended treatment plan or have already started treatment, a second opinion can help you feel confident your current treatment is right for you.

A second opinion may also highlight additional treatment options, access to new and emerging therapies or clinical trials. Either way, it can help you make an informed decision about your care.
