The process

What to expect

From the moment you contact us, we want you to feel supported and informed. One of the ways we can help put you at ease is by explaining what to expect at each stage of your care.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here or in the FAQs below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our team will be happy to help in any way they can.

01

Initial consultation

You’ll begin with an appointment with one of our expert HPB (hepato-pancreato-biliary) consultants. They’ll give you the time and space to talk about your symptoms – such as abdominal pain, fatigue, jaundice or nausea – and take a full medical history to help guide the next steps.

02

Diagnostic testing

To fully understand what’s causing your symptoms, we may recommend diagnostic imaging or blood tests. These could include ultrasound, CT, MRI, or specialist liver function tests. Most tests can be carried out on-site, with rapid turnaround times to ensure the process moves along as quickly as possible.

03

Personalised treatment planning

Once your diagnosis is confirmed, we’ll work with you to create a tailored treatment plan based on your specific needs and preferences. This may include monitoring, medication, lifestyle adjustments or, in some cases, surgery. This approach means that your care is personalised and focused from the start.

04

Ongoing support

Throughout your care, you’ll be supported by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. We’ll make sure you have clear communication, continuity of care, and access to the right people at the right time.

Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) FAQ

Your liver, pancreas, bile ducts and gallbladder are a complex system within your body, and there are many kinds of specific tests and scans for the different conditions that can affect them. Your specialist surgical team will want to have an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan in place before commencing surgery. A hepatologist will usually create a diagnostic plan which may include some or all of following kinds of tests:
  • MRI, CT or ultrasound scans, which can help visualise your liver, pancreas or biliary system and identify specific problems
  • Endoscopic procedures that use a small camera inside your body, along with X-rays, to examine a particular area in detail
  • Blood tests to check how well your liver, pancreas or biliary system are functioning
Time is a key factor with many HPB conditions, so you should be able to make an appointment in as little as 24 hours. Our process is designed to make sure you’re able to see a consultant hepatologist, get diagnosed and on a path to treatment with the HPB surgery department as quickly as possible.
Not necessarily. Many HPB conditions can be treated with medication or other non-surgical methods, but if you do need surgery, The Harborne Hospital is one of the best-equipped in the UK.

Our Level 3 ITU provides advanced intensive care supported by expert teams for all levels of complexity. You’ll get also receive excellent post-operative care in world-class facilities, and all the help you need to prepare for your recovery and any next steps.
