A guide to knee pain
The knee is the largest joint in the human body as it’s where three bones come together; the thigh bone (femur), the shin bone (tibia) and the kneecap (patella). Add to this your knee ligaments and cartilage and it’s easy to understand why a specialist is needed to accurately diagnose a knee injury or pain.
Whatever knee pain you have, we have the treatment options available to get you back living the life you love - from everyday activities to twisting on the tennis court or tending to the garden.
Our extensive range of knee services include
- ACL reconstruction - Our surgeons perform in excess of 400 ACL reconstructions annually by arthroscopically replacing the torn anterior cruciate ligament with a tendon graft
- Knee osteotomy - A realignment procedure carried out by our specialists to help redistribute weight away from your painful arthritic knee joint
- Meniscal surgery - To either repair or remove and replace the torn meniscus and improve long-term knee function and mobility
- Total or partial knee replacement - Surgery to treat advanced osteoarthritis or other injuries affecting either part of or the entire knee joint
- Knee arthroscopy - A diagnostic test which allows our knee consultant to investigate the inside of your knee joint using a small surgical camera (arthroscope)
- Joint injections - Our knee specialists can provide local injections eg cortisone to give you pain relief from arthritis and inflammation of the knee
What to expect
- Once you have been referred to an HCA UK knee specialist, and have your initial consultation, we like to arrange diagnostic imaging that can be on the same day as your first appointment
- Your consultant will discuss your history and any exercise or physiotherapy treatments you may have already undertaken
- If non-surgical treatments are no longer providing you with the pain relief or mobility levels you require, various surgical options will be discussed
Our patients trust us
In 2023, 99% of our patients said they are likely or very likely to recommend us to their family and friends for orthopaedic care. And 97% of our orthopaedic patients rated us very good or excellent (2023 patient satisfaction survey results).

Robotic-assisted procedures
Robotic procedures provide increased precision compared to traditional knee replacement surgery. In use since 2006, our orthopaedic surgeons have performed over 1000 robotic-assisted replacement surgeries at HCA UK. Robotic-assisted surgery is performed by integrating a 3D CT scan of your unique anatomy with the actual procedure being carried out. The 3D model gives our surgeons a far greater understanding of your joint than with X-ray alone. This ensures more accuracy in terms of choosing the exact size, placing and positioning of your knee replacement implant.
Paying for your own treatment
For self-pay patients considering knee replacement surgery, we offer fixed price packages. To help with budgeting and to bring you peace of mind before treatment your consultant will advise you on whether you qualify for one or more fixed price options, and what the best surgical option is for you as part of your treatment plan.
Our treatment prices range from:
- Standard partial knee replacement including prosthesis: £13,287
- Robotic-assisted partial knee replacement or custom prosthesis: £14,420
- Standard total knee replacement including prosthesis: £15,708
- Robotic-assisted total knee replacement or custom prosthesis: £16,892
