This is only a selection of the diagnostic and imaging options available at The Wilmslow Hospital – we have several additional tests available depending on your individual needs.

Diagnostic imaging

MRI scan

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a type of imaging scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce high-quality images of the inside of your body including your head, hips, and breast area.

MRI scans take between 15- and 90-minutes dependent on the area(s) of the body being scanned. On the day our team will talk you through your scan and be able to answer any questions you may have.

Ultrasound

An ultrasound scan is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs and tissues or blood flow inside the body. An ultrasound scan can be used across a wide range of medical specialties including orthopaedics, hepatology, gastroenterology, cardiology, gynaecology and urology.

Mammogram (2D and 3D)

A mammogram uses the latest high-resolution digital technology with low-dose X-rays to get a picture of the inside of your breast. A mammogram is used to look for early signs of breast cancer when anomalies are too small to see or feel. Your breasts will be X-rayed in detail so any problems, such as cancerous cells, can be found early. Your breasts will be X-rayed one at a time and each breast is X-rayed twice, from different angles. Mammograms can be used as part of breast screening or as part of a one-stop breast clinic appointment.

Digital fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a type of X-ray used to create moving images of internal parts of your body. You might need to have a fluoroscopy if your consultant wants to investigate your gastrointestinal tract or if you're having orthopaedic or urological surgery.

There are lots of different kinds of fluoroscopies you can have, and these various procedures can take anywhere between 10 and 45 minutes.

Blood tests

We have an extensive offering of blood tests to check for certain diseases and conditions and monitor your health.

PET-CT

PET-CT scans provide a detailed picture of your cells and your body's internal structures using low dose radiation. They combine PET (positron emission tomography) and CT (computised tomography technology in one full body scanner.

This advanced nuclear imaging technique shows how the cells in the body are functioning, whilst at the same time generating 2D and 3D images of the inside the body.

Cardiac diagnostic tests

Cardiology diagnostic imaging

Our cardiology diagnostic services are supported by specialist consultants and the latest diagnostic equipment.

ECG

An ECG is a simple and non-invasive test to assess and record the rate, rhythm and electrical activity of your heart. It can be used to diagnose or monitor heart conditions such as an abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia), or to determine the effectiveness of medication. It’s often used as part of a routine medical check-up to make sure your heart is functioning normally.

Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart, also known as an ‘echo’, used to examine the structure and function of the heart. The moving image created by an ultrasound allows your consultant to check if your heart and valves are working correctly.

Cardiac stress test

Gives information about how your heart functions under the strain of exercise. The test involves walking on a treadmill at a controlled speed and incline while monitoring your heart rate and blood pressure.

Angiogram

Also known as a cardiac catheterisation. This is a diagnostic procedure to look inside your heart’s arteries to see if there are any blockages or narrowing of the arteries, as well as assessing how well your heart is pumping blood.

Sphygmocor pulse pressure monitoring

A test for measuring blood pressure and arterial stiffness, which is an indicator of heart disease and vascular disease. This test can detect any elevated risk for sudden cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke, as well as identifying whether you have hypertension (high blood pressure).

Endoscopy diagnostic tests

Hysteroscopy

An outpatient procedure that examines the inside of the uterus and cervix.

Cystoscopy

Your consultant might suggest you have a cystoscopy to help diagnose any problems in your bladder or urethra. They may be looking for causes of infection or bleeding, or to help identify the causes of infection, bleeding or to help identify the cause of incontinence or other bladder issues. A cystoscopy is usually undertaken as a day case procedure.

Colposcopy

A procedure in which the cervix (neck of the womb) is examined in detail with a microscope to identify any abnormal cells.

Knee and ankle arthroscopy

Minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate and treat common problems affecting the knee and ankle joints. An arthroscopy allows your consultant to see inside your joints using a tiny camera which is inserted through small incisions in your skin. This helps them to diagnose and treat common joint problems – including torn cartilage, ligament damage and arthritis – without open surgery.

Gastroscopy

A procedure used to examine the upper part of your digestive system, including your oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the first part of your small intestine). This procedure is sometimes referred to as a gastrointestinal endoscopy or upper GI endoscopy. This procedure enables your consultant to look inside this part of your body using a tiny, flexible camera called an endoscope.

Colonoscopy

A procedure used to examine your bowel in detail, using a tiny, flexible camera called an endoscope which is inserted through your anus. You could be referred by your GP or physician for a colonoscopy if you’ve had blood in your stool or have noticed a change to your bowel habits.

Bronchoscopy

A test to look at your trachea and airways around your windpipe and take samples for diagnosis and treatment. You may have a bronchoscopy for various reasons, from investigating a persistent cough, to taking a mucus sample if you have a lung infection.

Biopsy

Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy

A minimally invasive procedure that removes a small tissue sample to check for signs of disease.

Liver biopsy

A procedure where a small sample of tissue is removed from your liver, for study under a microscope. You may have a liver biopsy if blood tests or scans indicate you may have a liver condition. The results can help determine the nature and severity of liver disease. On top of diagnosis, biopsy findings also help guide treatment decisions, and disease monitoring and management.

Lung biopsy

A specialised procedure conducted by expert radiologists to diagnose lung conditions.

Muscle and nerve biopsy

A specialised procedure conducted by expert neurophysiologists to diagnose muscle and nerve conditions.
