Expert screening and diagnostics

We offer a rapid-access breast screening programme, with results often available within 24 hours. Our screening clinics use the very latest diagnostic equipment, including MRI scans, 3D mammography, ultrasound and, where appropriate, CT and PET-CT scans. We can also carry out a biopsy (a sample of breast tissue), if required.

At The Wilmslow Hospital, we offer routine breast screening to women over the age of 40, who aren’t experiencing any symptoms and haven’t had a mammogram in the last 12 months.

One-Stop Breast Clinic

We understand that experiencing symptoms of breast cancer can be a very worrying time. That’s why our One-Stop Breast Clinic is designed to help you get quicker access to a diagnosis. You’ll be cared for by our expert team in a confidential and comfortable environment.

What to expect
From the moment you step through the door at The Wilmslow Hospital, we want you to feel as comfortable as possible.

One of the ways we can put you at ease is to let you know what to expect at each stage of your One-stop Breast Clinic appointment.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here or in the FAQ section below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our team will be happy to help in any way they can.

01

Initial consultation

Whether you’ve self-referred or have a referral from your GP, the first step is always an initial consultation with one of our consultants and a specialist breast care nurse. They’ll take the time to ask about your symptoms and medical history, and answer any questions you may have. Your consultant will also carry out a physical examination of your breasts.

02

Scans

The next step is a mammogram, which provides your consultant with X-ray images of your breasts. If they need to take a closer look, you may also have an ultrasound scan, MRI scan or, where appropriate, CT and CT-PET scan. Our radiologists and breast care nurses will make sure you’re as comfortable as possible during the scans and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

03

Same-day results

Your consultant or specialist breast care nurse will discuss the results of these tests with you at your visit. If no further tests are required, then our team will advise you on when your next mammogram should be.

04

Next steps

If your tests show any irregularities, we may take a biopsy (a sample of breast tissue) during your visit. These results are usually ready within two to three working days. Our specialist breast care nurses will be available to provide ongoing support while you wait for the results.

Sometimes, breast tests and investigations will lead to a cancer diagnosis. If this happens, we’ll be here to support you and ensure that you get fast, direct access to leading breast cancer consultants at our hospital.

You’ll be supported by a dedicated clinical nurse specialist and a wider team of experts, who’ll coordinate your care and arrange for your chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment to be carried out at our specialist cancer centre, The Christie Private Care.

Breast care FAQs

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer diagnosed in women across the UK, but it’s important to remember it can also affect men. That’s why everyone should look out for any changes to the appearance or feel of their breasts or nipples.

Should you notice any changes, including lumps, pain, nipple changes or nipple discharge, or skin changes, it’s essential that you have these looked at by a breast specialist without delay. Finding breast cancer early can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Remember, you also have breast tissue under your arms and in your chest, so it’s important to check your armpits and up to your collarbone. If you do discover anything while checking yourself, such as a lump or other changes, you can receive all the necessary tests at our One-Stop Breast Clinic.

Most breast lumps are non-cancerous. But if you are diagnosed with cancer, you’ll have immediate access to a world-leading team of cancer experts, who’ll recommend a personalised treatment and care plan based on your individual needs and the latest treatment options. Find out more about our expert-led breast cancer services here.
We can usually provide appointments within 48 working hours. This is to see a consultant specialist and have all your initial diagnostic tests carried out. We may even be able to arrange an appointment on the same day. Our team will always try to fit you in as quickly as possible.

Your mammogram and ultrasound results will be available on the day of your appointment. If you need a biopsy, these results will usually be available within 2-3 working days.
If you’re accessing our One-Stop Breast Clinic through your insurer, you’ll need a GP referral before you book your appointment. We can provide same or next-day GP appointments through our private GP service. Alternatively, your current GP can provide a referral – simply request HCA Healthcare UK and they can refer you to us.

If you have private medical insurance, you’ll need an authorisation code from your insurer before calling us.

If you’re self-funding your care, you don’t need a GP referral. You can call us directly on 01625 545036 to book an appointment at our One-Stop Breast Clinic.
If you’re not covered by private medical insurance, you can self-fund your appointment. A visit to our One-stop Breast Clinic costs £975*. This package includes all of your initial diagnostic tests, a mammogram and/or ultrasound with same-day imaging results, and a biopsy (a sample of breast tissue), if required. Please note, exclusions may apply.

*Package price does not include consultation fees. Biopsy results will usually be available in 2-3 working days. If additional tests are required, we’ll provide you with the costs of these tests before they go ahead.
Yes, they can. While breast cancer is more common in women, it can also affect men. Our clinic is open to anyone with symptoms or concerns related to their breast health.

Your consultant will explain what imaging tests you’ll need. These will be the most appropriate ones for your symptoms. You may also need to have a biopsy so your consultant can make an accurate diagnosis.

We offer the following as part of our comprehensive breast care service:

  • A mammogram (2D or 3D imaging)
  • An ultrasound scan
  • A biopsy (if required, often using the Brevera Breast Biopsy System for a more comfortable experience)

Your consultant will be happy to answer any questions you may have about these tests.

If you receive a breast cancer diagnosis, we’ll be here to support you and provide continuity of care. At HCA UK, we can give you direct access to our sister site, The Christie Private Care in Manchester. This specialist cancer centre provides the latest and most innovative cancer treatments, delivered by a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists.

Our team at The Christie Private Care will create a personalised treatment plan that’s tailored to your needs and ensure you receive the highest standards of clinical care in a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment. You can find out more about our breast cancer services here.
