Dr van der Watt completed his undergraduate training in Cape Town, South Africa, before specialising in internal medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital. He later moved to the UK and specialised in cardiology.

Alongside his clinical commitments, Mr van der Watt is also Medical Director of the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
