With heart disease continuing to be one of the UK’s leading causes of death, identifying cardiovascular risk early remains a vital part of preventative care.

The Heart Health Check at The Harborne Hospital offers patients a comprehensive, consultant-led assessment that is personalised to their individual needs, lifestyle and medical history.

We recently did a Q&A with Dr Farhan Shahid, Consultant Cardiologist at The Harborne Hospital about the importance of proactive cardiac care and how Heart Health Checks support patients in taking ownership of their cardiovascular wellbeing.

Why are heart health checks so important?

“When people understand their personal risk factors, they are more motivated to act. Being able to see data like blood pressure, cholesterol or ECG results, often prompts positive change to proactively manage heart health.”

“People often put their own health last and a Heart Health Check creates space for reflection and advice for the future, including preventative treatment plans and lifestyle changes.”

Who is the service suitable for?

“Any adult over the age of 18 who wants a better understanding of their heart health can benefit. It is especially helpful for people with a family history of cardiac disease, diabetes, raised cholesterol or a sedentary lifestyle. Even people with no symptoms often want reassurance and a clearer picture.”

What does the Heart Health Check include?

“The patient starts with a clinical consultation and core tests including an ECG, blood panel and echocardiogram. Based on those results and the person’s individual risk factors, we may recommend further tests such as a CT coronary calcium score, cardiac MRI or extended ECG monitoring.”

“Each plan is tailored. For example, if someone is worried about rhythm problems, we might use a longer-term monitor. If coronary artery disease is a concern, we may arrange imaging to assess this. The service adapts to the person’s needs.”

What happens after the check?

“Every patient receives a full summary report. If anything requires further attention, we refer them directly to the most appropriate consultant within our cardiology team.” “We ensure that patients are guided to the right specialist without delay. That might be an electrophysiologist, an interventional cardiologist or another colleague. The service is designed not just to detect issues but to provide a clear route to next steps.”
