A MINIMALLY INVASIVE PRCEDURE FOR KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS
Genicular Artery Embolisation (GAE) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce knee pain in patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. By targeting and blocking abnormal blood vessels in the knee, GAE reduces inflammation and improves knee function.
You will need to have a number of blood tests carried out approximately one week before the procedure date. You will be asked to stop medication that thins the blood prior to the procedure.
Performed under local anaesthetic, GAE takes about 1 hour and is typically done as an outpatient procedure. A small catheter is inserted into the femoral artery in the groin, and tiny particles are used to block the abnormal blood vessels supplying the knee.
After GAE, patients may experience mild discomfort, stiffness, or pain in the treated knee for up to a month. Most patients can return to normal activities within days, though heavy lifting and driving should be avoided for at least 5 days.
