Endoscopic sutured gastroplasty (ESG)

A minimally invasive weight-loss procedure

Enquiries & Appointments

What is ESG?

Endoscopic sutured gastroplasty (ESG) is designed to help individuals manage obesity effectively without the need for surgery. By utilising advanced endoscopic techniques, ESG reduces the size of the stomach to promote a feeling of fullness and support long-term weight management.

Am I a good candidate for ESG?

You will only be recommended for the procedure after a thorough assessment by a consultant. ESG is ideal for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 who have struggled with traditional weight-loss methods. It is particularly suitable for those seeking a less invasive alternative to surgery.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

All required pre-procedure tests will be completed during your outpatient appointment before scheduling the procedure.
You may need a special diet for two weeks prior; your consultant will advise you. We will also ask you to take anti-acid medication for two weeks before to reduce irritation.
Avoid eating for 8 hours and drinking for 6 hours before the procedure; otherwise, it may be delayed or incomplete.

What happens during the procedure?

During the procedure, a flexible endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the stomach. Using specialised suturing tools, your consultant will create a series of internal folds (pleats or plications) along the stomach wall. These sutures reduce the stomach's volume, limiting food intake and slowing digestion. The entire procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, typically lasting 60 minutes, and requires no external incisions.

What happens after the procedure?

First 8 hours: You will not be allowed to eat or drink except for water to allow your stomach to rest. You should expect to go home the same day.

First 2 weeks: You will stay on a liquid diet to help the stitches heal well. You should also avoid strenuous activities.

Ongoing: You will need to attend follow-up appointments and follow dietary guidelines to ensure recovery and weight loss success.

What are the benefits of ESG?

Minimally invasive: No external scars or large surgical cuts.

Short recovery time: Most patients return to normal activities within a few days.

Effective weight loss: Helps reduce hunger and improve satiety, supporting long-term weight loss.

Reversible and adjustable: Unlike other bariatric procedures, ESG can be modified or reversed if needed.
