Understanding your occupational therapy journey

What to expect
Illness, injury or ageing can all have a significant impact on both your physical abilities and your psychological well-being. We know how devasting that can be for your independence and confidence, and our skilled private occupational therapy teams are here for you.

They can help you or your child to develop, maintain or regain the ability to do the things you need and want to do, and provide support for a wide range of conditions. Every plan is personalised, but this gives you an idea of what to expect.

01

Comprehensive initial assessment

This will be completed by an occupational therapist (OT) who’ll have a thorough and in-depth conversation with you and/ or your child. They’ll use a highly effective set of standardised assessments to understand your challenges and needs.

02

Develop a treatment plan

Based on this initial assessment, your detailed medical history and your consultant’s assessment of your current condition, your OT team will develop a treatment plan for you. This plan will be shaped around patient-centred goals and focus on daily activities.

03

Daily OT sessions

You’re likely to have one or two daily OT sessions, depending on your needs. This will include meetings with our multi-disciplinary teams to ensure that you have the holistic support you need. With your permission and help, we’ll also set up family meetings, training and education for any carers in your support community.

04

Discharge planning

We want to ensure that you always have the correct support in place, so we’ll work with you to identify where you should be best be discharged to from our care, ensuring that you’ll have a safe and supportive onward experience.

Our discharge planning will include organising any referrals you may need to access the community-based support that can often be so helpful day to day. We can also help with adapting your home in any way you need and getting hold of specialist equipment that may help to make your life easier.

Occupational Therapy FAQ

If an illness, injury or disability is stopping you from living your life to the full, occupational therapy is here to help make everyday tasks easier and more possible. Our private occupational therapy teams can help you or your child to develop, regain or maintain practical skills to do the things you want and need, from personal care, to work and social or school activities. Our specialist teams are here for you.

If you have a long-term condition, including a developmental disorder, physical disability, cognitive challenge, chronic pain or a mental health condition our occupational therapy teams could help you live a more confident, independent and fulfilling life.

Children with developmental delays, physical disabilities, learning difficulties or sensory processing challenges may all benefit from seeing a skilled paediatric occupational therapist. The right support could help your child develop skills that will make everyday school activities easier as well as supporting them with play and other social interactions.
It’s well known that autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) effects different children in different ways. While many children with autism won’t need the support of a paediatric occupational therapist, the right OT support can greatly help some children with autism to develop essential life skills and participate more fully both socially and at school.

A skilled paediatric occupational therapist can help you child to develop the skills and strategies they need to navigate their world with greater independence and confidence by better managing sensory processing differences, better regulating their emotions and improving their overall participation in daily activities.

If you think occupational therapy could benefit your child, we’re here to help.
There's no special preparation needed for your assessment – you can just come as you are and be yourself in the session. Your occupational therapist will talk to you about your needs and identify any tasks or activities that are challenging because of your health.
You may feel that you need ongoing occupational therapy support, and our team will always let you know if they think that any follow-up treatments or assessments are needed.

If you've agreed an ongoing treatment plan, they'll work with you to arrange a convenient time for your follow-up appointments. They may also refer you to community teams to support your ongoing therapy and care once you’re discharged.

My recovery is totally down to the therapists and staff at The Wellington and the amazing equipment they have there.
