Sarcomas are rare and complex cancers that require highly specialised treatment. At HCA Healthcare UK, we are proud to be one of the UK’s leading private sarcoma networks. Our sarcoma consultants are some of the most experienced and knowledgeable specialists in the country, ensuring you receive outstanding levels of care in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
Our expert teams, including surgeons, and clinical and medical oncologists, specialise in treating all types of soft tissue and bone sarcomas, even the most complex cases.
Our multidisciplinary team will work together to create a personalised treatment plan tailored specifically to you. Your recommended treatment plan will be based on the most effective surgical and non-surgical treatments, and will take into account the type, size, location, and stage of your sarcoma, as well as your personal wishes.
Treatment for soft tissue sarcoma typically involves surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these approaches. In many cases, surgery is the primary treatment, aiming to remove the tumour with precision while preserving surrounding tissues. We have consultants and clinical teams who specialise in all treatment options for sarcoma, and can provide exceptional care.
Sarcomas can often affect multiple organs and tissues, so depending on the size of your tumour and where it is located, your operation may require multiple surgeons who specialise in treating sarcoma in different areas of the body. Across HCA UK we have a unique team of surgical and non-surgical specialists within one single network. Your lead sarcoma consultant will draw on this network of surgical expertise to create a team who can perform these often complex surgeries in a single operation.
“The benefit of being part of the HCA healthcare UK network is that not only do we have some of the best sarcoma specialists in the country, but have specialist colleagues in other disciplines, such as orthopaedic and vascular surgeons, which means we can collaborate on even the most complex cases. We also have the right clinical environments to undertake complex care safely, with state-of-the-art operating theatres and intensive therapy units should we need them.”
We have sarcoma surgeons and clinical teams who specialise in treating sarcomas in all areas of the body, including:
Radiotherapy may also be given either before or after your surgery. We provide the latest and most advanced radiotherapy techniques, providing highly targeted and effective radiotherapy treatment. Our close working relationship with Proton International means you will also have access to Proton Beam radiotherapy. Your consultant will discuss the most effective radiotherapy treatment options for you.
If you have been diagnosed with an advanced sarcoma, chemotherapy may be your primary treatment, and in some cases, your treatment plan may include a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
If you have been diagnosed with a bone sarcoma your treatment plan will usually include a combination of surgery and chemotherapy.
There are two main types of surgery used to treat bone sarcomas, which include:
Limb sparing surgery: This is a type of surgery that removes the cancer while sparing you limb. During this surgery a section of bone is removed. Your surgeon will then use an implant or bone graft to rebuild your bone.
Surgery to remove your limb (amputation): On some occasions, to remove all of the cancer, your surgeon will need to remove all or part of your limb. This will depend on where your cancer is located and the extent of surgery required to remove it. After surgery you can be fitted with a prosthesis, which is an artificial limb that can help you regain your mobility.
These are highly complex surgeries that require an expert approach. Our sarcoma and orthopaedic surgeons, and wider clinical teams, have extensive experience in these operations. You can be assured you will be receiving exceptional levels of care, tailored to your individual diagnosis and needs.
If surgery isn’t an option, or if additional treatment is needed, radiotherapy may also be recommended as part of your treatment plan.
