Cancer symptoms: getting you the right help

If you’re worried about symptoms, it’s important to get them checked without delay. Most of the time these symptoms can be caused by something less serious than cancer. However, when cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is more likely to be successful. Knowing some of the key signs and symptoms can help you identify any changes that need to be checked.

Cancer can affect the body in different ways, and symptoms vary from person to person. Below are some of the general signs and symptoms to look out for. However, if you’re experiencing any changes that are new or unusual, don’t improve or seem to be getting worse, whether they are listed here or not, you should arrange an appointment with a doctor.

  • Unexplained weight loss – particularly if it happens over a short period
  • Persistent pain – that doesn’t improve or has no clear cause
  • A new lump – or a change in the size or feel of an existing one
  • Unexplained bleeding – such as blood in urine, stools or between periods
  • Ongoing changes in bowel habits – including constipation or diarrhoea
  • Persistent bloating – that doesn’t settle over time
  • Ongoing tiredness – that isn’t relieved by rest
  • A long-lasting cough or hoarse voice
  • New moles – or changes in the colour, size or shape of existing moles
  • Difficulty swallowing – pain or a burning sensation when swallowing
  • Loss of appetite – that lasts for several weeks

If you’re experiencing any of these, or any other new or persistent symptoms, book an appointment with one of our GPs or a specialist.

Specialist cancer diagnostics for accurate answers

With direct access to the most advanced tests and scans, we’ll get you the answers you need without delay.

Our team have the knowledge, expertise and technology to provide the most accurate diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with cancer we’ll provide you with a personalised care plan and the latest treatment options.

Some of the tests and scans used to diagnose cancer include:

CT scan (Computerised Tomography)

CT scans use X-rays and computer processing to show detailed images of the body. They are used to show the size, shape and location of tumours and provide essential information for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning and to monitor how cancer is responding to treatment.

PET scan (Positron Emission Tomography)

A PET scan shows how tissues and organs are functioning by using a small amount of radioactive tracer injected into the bloodstream. Using a special camera this allows clinicians to identify areas of abnormal activity linked to cancer, supporting accurate diagnosis, staging and ongoing assessment of treatment effectiveness.

PET-CT and 4D CT

A PET-CT scan combines two types of imaging to give a detailed and accurate view of what’s happening inside your body. It helps us see how tissues look and how they’re behaving. With advanced 4D CT available across our network, we can plan treatment with even greater precision, particularly in areas of the body that are more difficult to see.

Ultrasound scan

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of organs or specific areas of concern. Ultrasound can be used for initial diagnosis, to assess how cancer is responding to treatment, and to carry out image-guided biopsies.

MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate highly detailed images of the body. It helps in diagnosing, staging and monitoring many cancers.

Mammogram

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. Mammograms can be used as part of screening to check for breast cancer before any symptoms become noticeable. They can also be used to provide a diagnosis if you have symptoms of breast cancer.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT/3D Mammography)

DBT, often referred to as 3D mammography uses multiple X-rays from different angles to build a detailed 3D view of the breast. This enhanced image quality improves detection of smaller tumours, especially in younger women who often have naturally dense breast tissue.

Blood tests

Blood tests can reveal changes associated with cancer, such as abnormal levels of specific markers. While not used alone to diagnose cancer, they provide important insights that guide further investigation and help track how the cancer is responding to treatment.

Biopsies

A biopsy involves taking a tissue sample from a specific area to confirm or rule out cancer. Techniques range from needle, endoscopic or robotic biopsies to surgical approaches. With advanced imaging guidance, biopsies can target even small or hard-to-reach tumours, supporting accurate diagnosis and staging.

Molecular diagnostics

Molecular testing looks for genetic changes that help cancer cells to grow. These insights support precise diagnosis and help personalise treatment by showing which therapies are likely to be most effective for an individual’s tumour type.

Endoscopic procedures

Endoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to examine internal organs. Depending on the area being assessed, procedures include bronchoscopy (lungs), colonoscopy (colon and rectum), colposcopy (cervix), cystoscopy (bladder), gastroscopy (upper digestive system) and hysteroscopy (womb). These tests allow close examination and, in many cases, tissue sampling.

Ion Endoluminal System (Ion)

We’re the first independent healthcare provider in Europe to offer the Ion platform, a breakthrough technology that has transformed the way we diagnose lung nodules.

Lung abnormalities can be difficult to reach and diagnose. In the past, consultants have often relied on a ‘watch and wait’ approach, waiting until a nodule became large enough to test. Ion has completely changed this. Using robotically assisted technology, we can now reach nodules that were either previously too small or too hard to access without this delay – giving you a diagnosis much earlier than previously possible.

We know that waiting for tests and scans, and the results, can be a worrying time, so we’ll always book your appointment as soon as we’re able to.

For urgent referrals we can often arrange for you to have any tests and scans within 48 hours, or even on the same day if clinically necessary. If you are diagnosed with cancer, whatever type or stage, you’ll have immediate access to a whole team of cancer experts.
Most diagnostic results are available quickly – within days and even on the same day depending on the tests you’re having. Your GP or specialist will explain the results clearly and guide you through any recommended next steps, whether that’s reassurance, further investigation or treatment.

If you’re considering private cancer care, you can speak to your GP or a consultant about a referral – you’ll just need to ask for HCA UK. They can provide a referral letter, which you’ll bring with you when you come for a consultation.

Simply contact your insurer with your referral details, and they’ll confirm what’s covered under your policy.

Absolutely. You can ask for a second opinion at any point, whether you’re newly diagnosed, reviewing treatment recommendations or already receiving care. Hearing from another specialist can reassure you that your current plan is the best option or introduce additional treatments, clinical trials or emerging therapies that may also be suitable.

Either outcome can give you greater confidence and help you make fully informed decisions about your care.
