Why do I get hip pain?

The hip is one of the most stressed joints in our body. That’s because it’s in constant use. Whether we're walking, sitting or driving, the precise location of your hip pain can provide valuable insight.

As soon as your hip joint starts to stiffen or cause pain, the natural reaction is to avoid using it as much. However, the hip becomes weaker through lack of movement. As the hip joint deteriorates the rest of your body load is often transferred to the lower back, knee and other hip - which helps to explain why you may be feeling pain in these areas too.

Our hip specialists treat:

  1. Hip dysplasia - We provide the full range of dysplasia treatments, including Pavlik’s harness for babies and open or closed reduction surgery for adults and adolescents
  2. Hip arthroscopy - This minimally invasive procedure offers an alternative to open techniques and can evaluate hip conditions such as labral tears, arthritis and chondral injuries
  3. Hip replacement - Advanced options include anterior minimally invasive surgery (AMIS) and robotic-assisted procedures using custom implants and 3D scanning technology
  4. Hip impingement surgery - This minimally invasive procedure helps to reshape abnormalities within the hip joint, preventing further pain and reducing the risk of later arthritis
  5. Hip revision - Using the most advanced techniques available, we can replace your original hip replacement with a completely new one
  6. Arthritis - From state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging to treatment and aftercare, we treat the full range of hip arthritis problems
  7. Tendon or soft tissue injury - For those experiencing pain, tenderness and mild swelling as a result of a tendon injury, we’ll engage our orthopaedic and sports medicine specialists to treat the underlying cause

Patient story: Michael's hip surgery

Michael realised he had arthritis in his right hip. By March 2021, his mobility was severely affected, with ebbs and flows of intensity, but always present and impeding. After being told it didn’t warrant surgery, even though he could barely walk from the pain, a recommendation brought him to Professor Richard Field at The Lister Hospital.

Michael shares his story and explains why this surgery was so important. Find out about his hip treatment.

World-class facilities and consultants

Our hip consultants are leaders in their specialist field.  We support them by investing heavily in the latest medical equipment to create the best possible outcomes for your treatment.

At The Portland Hospital, our state-of-the-art EOSedgeTM low dose X-ray machine offers advanced scanning and is particularly suited to children. Our consultants also have access to weight-bearing CT scanners, robotic-assisted surgery tools (MAKO) and custom implants for replacement surgeries.

Robotic-assisted procedures

Robotic procedures can provide even more precision than normal hip replacement surgery. In use since 2006, our orthopaedic surgeons have performed over 1000 robotic-assisted replacement surgeries at HCA UK.

Robotic-assisted surgery is performed by integrating a 3D CT scan of your unique anatomy with the actual procedure being carried out. The 3D model gives our surgeons a far greater understanding of your joint. This ensures far greater accuracy in terms of choosing the exact size, placing and positioning of your hip replacement implant.
