Follow up and ongoing care
Our specialist teams of orthopaedic surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists offer treatment plans for a wide range of upper and lower limb orthopaedic conditions and concerns, including knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and foot care.
Our patients include everyone from elite athletes and everyday sports enthusiasts with an acute injury to patients suffering from long-term joint pain. Whether it's a sports injury or a complex condition, we’re dedicated to helping you recover quickly and effectively.
Some of the conditions we treat at The Wilmslow Hospital include:
Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury
The AC joint at the top of your shoulder, between collarbone and shoulder blade, is needed for the overhead and cross-body movement of your arm, as well as for giving you strength in physical activities such as throwing, pushing, pulling and lifting. A direct impact can injure your AC joint.
ACL injury
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a ligament that runs across and inside your knee to keep it stable, attaching the thigh bone (femur) to the top of your shin bone (tibia). A full or partial tear of the ACL can stop you from doing some of your favourite sports, exercise or hobbies.
Achilles tendon rupture
A tear or separation of the tendon fibres is relatively common but can be quite serious in its impact. You may have difficulty walking or running and will need surgery if the tendon ends aren’t in contact.
Bunions
Also known as hallus valgus, bunions form when there is too much pressure on the inside of the foot at the base of the big toe. Our consultants perform corrective surgery for many patients to relieve them of the discomfort from walking and ill-fitting shoes.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
A condition where pressure on a nerve in the wrist affects your ability to control movement in the wrist and hand. This is often accompanied by a tingling sensation, numbness and pain.
Dupuytren's disease
A common, painless and benign condition that causes a progressive deformity, resulting in one or more fingers bending into the palm of the hand. It occurs when there is a build-up of thick fibrous tissue in the palm that radiates into the fingers.
Frozen shoulder
This is a painful condition, occurring when the capsule within the shoulder joint thickens and stiffens. The cause is often unknown, but it can be more common in people with diabetes.
Ganglion
A benign mass or swelling overlying a joint or tendon that commonly appears on your wrist or finger joints. We can provide a rapid diagnosis and treatment.
Knee pain and sprains
If you have pain, discomfort, swelling or restricted movement in your knee, either from injury or progressive wear and tear it can affect your day-to-day life. Sprains can happen if you've damaged the muscles or one of the four ligaments that support the knee. Our knee specialists can help diagnose the cause of your pain or injury and offer the best treatment options for you.
Meniscus injury
A torn meniscus, or locked knee, is a common sports or exercise injury caused by forceful twisting. It can result in a swollen and painful knee joint and will require timely treatment.
Rotator cuff tears
The most common cause of shoulder pain. The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and their tendons which connect the shoulder blade to the upper arm. A tear will often restrict mobility.
Tennis elbow
This condition involves the tendons connecting your forearm muscles to your upper arm. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, our orthopaedic specialists can provide accurate diagnosis, expert advice and effective medical treatment.
When Chris was told the surgery he needed on his shoulder would likely make him unable to compete professionally in 2023, Chris dug deep into those reserves and hoped he could excel once more.
Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Neil Jain, specialises in sports injuries at The Wilmslow Hospital, including keyhole surgery for damage to knees and shoulders, including ligament and cartilage injuries, dislocation and rotator cuff repairs.
“I was doing stiff-leg deadlifts with 200kg weights by December, and I’m getting stronger and improving my range of motion all the time.”
