Orthopaedic conditions we treat

Hip injuries in sport

Our experts can diagnose the causes of hip and groin pain in sport and provide personalised treatment plans.

Groin pain

Groin pain can be caused by several conditions. It is most often caused by abductor strains, also called groin strains, which are injuries to any of the abductor muscles and tendons of the thigh. We offer a range of treatments for groin pain.

Hip impingement

Hip impingement, known as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), is where the hip ball doesn’t quite fit the joint socket. This can cause pain when moving, and groin pain in particular. We offer a range of state-of-the-art treatments for hip impingement and groin pain.

Labral hip tear

A labral tear in the hip is an injury that affects the tissue that holds the ball and socket parts of the hip joint together. Our specialist consultants offer a range of advanced treatments for Labral hip tears.

Fracture

A fractured or broken bone is normally the result of a high force impact, or another bone weakening condition, such as osteoporosis. If you've suffered a bone fracture, we can help.

Hip arthritis

Hip arthritis occurs when the cartilage that normally cushions the bones in your hip joint becomes damaged. This prevents the joint from moving smoothly and can cause pain and stiffness. There are several different types of hip arthritis. Our specialists can provide a diagnosis and talk you through your options to help you decide which hip arthritis treatment will be most effective for you.

Knee pain

If you have pain, discomfort, swelling or restricted movement in your knee, it can affect every aspect of your day-to-day life. These problems may result from an injury or wear and tear that gets worse over time. Our knee specialists are here to help diagnose a wide range of injuries and conditions and offer the best treatment options for you.

Knee sprain

If you have pain, swelling or tenderness around or inside your knee, you may have a knee sprain. Sprains can happen if you've damaged or injured the muscles or one of the four ligaments that support the knee. Common causes include tired muscles and playing sport. If you've suffered a knee sprain, we can help.

Cartilage injury

Cartilage damage is a relatively common condition which usually involves the knees, but joints such as the hips, ankles and elbows can also be affected. Our consultants have a range of treatment options available.

Torn ligaments

Ligaments are tough, flexible tissues which connect one bone to another bone and hold them in place. When too much force is applied to a ligament, it can become injured or torn. Torn ligaments usually come from sports injuries. Our specialist consultants offer a range of advanced treatments for torn ligaments.

Joint inflammation caused by sport

Sport can take its toll on your joints and cause inflammation and muscle pain. We can provide a rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. The most common injuries in people with osteoporosis are wrist and hip fractures, and fractures of the spinal vertebrae.

Rotator cuff tears

The most common cause of shoulder pain. The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and their tendons which connect the shoulder blade to the upper arm. A tear will often restrict mobility.

Shoulder and elbow dislocation

A shoulder dislocation happens when the upper end of the arm bone (humerus) comes out of the shoulder socket. It typically happens through sports injuries or falls or to those with hypermobility (loose joints). Our consultants offer advanced treatment of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow.

Frozen shoulder

This is a painful condition, occurring when the capsule within the shoulder joint thickens and stiffens. The cause is often unknown, but it can be more common in people with diabetes.

Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is a condition involving the tendons connecting your forearm muscles to your upper arm. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, our orthopaedic specialists can provide accurate diagnosis, expert advice and effective medical treatment.

Neck pain

Neck pain is rarely a sign of anything serious. It can happen if you've strained a muscle or sat or slept in an awkward position. Bad posture, anxiety and stress can also lead to neck pain. Normally, the problem will go away after a few days or weeks. If yours doesn't, our spinal, neurological and orthopaedic surgeons may be able to help.

Slipped disc

While it's possible to live with a slipped disc and not realise it, many people experience painful and uncomfortable symptoms. We can quickly diagnose a slipped disc and effectively treat the pain and symptoms that are holding you back.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS)

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a long-term condition that causes inflammation in the spine and other areas. It is more common in men and mostly begins during your teens or early adulthood. Our rheumatologists or spinal consultants can diagnose and treat this condition.

Arachnoiditis

Arachnoiditis is the inflammation of the arachnoid lining - one of three linings to protect the brain and spinal cord. Most treatments focus on relieving pain and improving symptoms to restore quality of life. Often, consultants will recommend physiotherapy and exercise.

Spinal cord injury

With a spinal cord injury, damage to nerve cells (neurons) and fibres means they are unable to carry signals from the brain beyond the point of injury. This can result in a loss of sensory and muscle control. Our highly advanced, multidisciplinary rehabilitation service combines treatment programmes, consultants and therapists.

Wrist pain

Any pain, discomfort or restricted movement in your wrist can have a major impact on day-to-day life. This may be the result of an injury, such as a fall, or wear and tear that worsens over time. Our hand and wrist specialists are here to help diagnose a wide range of injuries and conditions and offer the best treatment options for you.

Hand and wrist arthritis

This is a common condition that can affect people of all ages, causing pain and inflammation in the joints in the hand and wrist.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is the inflammation of the connective tissues between your muscles and bones. If your symptoms aren't improving, our orthopaedic specialists offer effective diagnosis and treatment.

Trigger finger and thumb

If one or more of the tendons in your hands become swollen or inflamed, you may find it difficult to bend your fingers or thumb, or they may lock. This condition is called trigger finger (or thumb). If you're having trouble bending your finger or thumb because of a swollen tendon, we can help.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

A condition where pressure on a nerve in the wrist affects control of movement in both the wrist and hand, often accompanied by a tingling sensation, numbness and pain.

Ganglion

A benign mass or swelling overlying a joint or tendon that commonly appears on your wrist or finger joints. We can provide a rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Heel pain

The heel absorbs a tremendous amount of shock from walking, running, or standing still for long periods. As such, damage can occur to the large ligament that stretches from the heel bone to the ball of the foot. This ligament, known as the plantar fascia and is made up of several ligaments, supports the arch of the foot. Our foot and ankle specialists are here to help diagnose a wide range of injuries and conditions and offer the best treatment options for you.

Bunions

Also known as hallus valgus, a condition that occurs when there is too much pressure on the inside of the foot at the base of the big toe. Our consultants perform corrective surgery for many patients to relieve them of the discomfort when walking and ill-fitting shoes.

Achilles tendon rupture

This occurs when there is a tear of separation of the tendon fibres.  It is relatively common and can be serious. You may need surgery if the tendon ends aren’t in contact.

Shin splints

A condition associated with high-impact activities such as running or dancing, shin splints cause pain or tenderness in the lower part of one or both legs. If you're experiencing shin bone pain, we offer shin splint treatment options to provide you relief.

Ankle arthritis

Ankle arthritis develops when the ankle joint has been damaged through injury or through wear-and-tear of the cartilage. The symptoms of ankle arthritis are pain, swelling, stiffness and a lack of mobility. Our specialists offer a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments.

Ankle sprains

The ankle joint is strengthened by ligaments on the inside and outside part of the ankle, as well as an arrangement of ligaments that bond together the fibula and tibia bones. These ligaments and the soft tissues surrounding them can be stretched or even torn if you roll or severely twist the ankle, resulting in a sprain.

Ankle fractures

A break or breaks in one or more of the three bones that make up the ankle joint, that may or may not puncture the skin. The fracture can sometimes result in dislocation of the ankle, therefore different types of treatment are available dependent on the injury itself.

Function loss from previous nerve surgery

When a nerve has been damaged many years before and has left the patient with permanent loss of function. in selected cases, the function can be partially restored by detaching muscles that perform another movement and redirecting them onto the paralysed muscles through surgery. Our leading peripheral nerve surgeons can treat historic nerve injuries, restoring function and relieving pain.

Nerve pain

From complex brachial plexus surgery to diagnostic tests and procedures, we provide exceptional peripheral nerve injury care.

Peripheral nerve tumours

Tumours can develop around the nerve, often leading to pain and the loss of movement. In most cases, these tumours are benign and can be removed with surgery.
