Orthopaedic care at The Wilmslow Hospital

What to expect
From the moment you step through the door, we want you to feel as comfortable and reassured as possible. One of the ways we can put you at ease is to let you know what to expect at each stage of your orthopaedic investigation and treatment process.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here or in the FAQs below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our team will be happy to help in any way they can.

01

Initial consultation

Whether you’ve self-referred or have a referral from a GP, the first step will be an initial consultation with one of our orthopaedic consultants to discuss any symptoms such as joint pain, reduced mobility, sports injuries, fractures, or musculoskeletal concerns.

02

Tests and scans

During your initial appointment, your consultant may also request some diagnostic tests, such as X-ray, MRI, CT, ultrasound, bone density scans, blood tests and more. Your scans will be reviewed by a specialist musculoskeletal radiologist, assuring you of rapid, accurate diagnosis and expert treatment for your condition.

03

Treatment

Once they’ve confirmed a diagnosis, our specialists will create a comprehensive treatment plan that’s fully personalised for your needs. Depending on your condition, this may include lifestyle changes, physiotherapy, or access to the latest surgical and nonsurgical procedures.

We provide a wide range of minimally invasive procedures that can help reduce pain and help get you back to your best as quickly as possible.

04

Follow up and ongoing care

Our consultants work with a full team of multidisciplinary specialists, including physiotherapists, dieticians, psychologists and more. They are here to support you throughout your recovery, ensuring you’re in safe hands at every stage.

FAQs

Our specialist teams of orthopaedic surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists offer treatment plans for a wide range of upper and lower limb orthopaedic conditions and concerns, including knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and foot care.

Our patients include everyone from elite athletes and everyday sports enthusiasts with an acute injury to patients suffering from long-term joint pain. Whether it's a sports injury or a complex condition, we’re dedicated to helping you recover quickly and effectively.

Some of the conditions we treat at The Wilmslow Hospital include:

Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury
The AC joint at the top of your shoulder, between collarbone and shoulder blade, is needed for the overhead and cross-body movement of your arm, as well as for giving you strength in physical activities such as throwing, pushing, pulling and lifting. A direct impact can injure your AC joint.

ACL injury
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a ligament that runs across and inside your knee to keep it stable, attaching the thigh bone (femur) to the top of your shin bone (tibia). A full or partial tear of the ACL can stop you from doing some of your favourite sports, exercise or hobbies.

Achilles tendon rupture
A tear or separation of the tendon fibres is relatively common but can be quite serious in its impact. You may have difficulty walking or running and will need surgery if the tendon ends aren’t in contact.

Bunions
Also known as hallus valgus, bunions form when there is too much pressure on the inside of the foot at the base of the big toe. Our consultants perform corrective surgery for many patients to relieve them of the discomfort from walking and ill-fitting shoes.

Carpal tunnel syndrome
A condition where pressure on a nerve in the wrist affects your ability to control movement in the wrist and hand. This is often accompanied by a tingling sensation, numbness and pain.

Dupuytren's disease
A common, painless and benign condition that causes a progressive deformity, resulting in one or more fingers bending into the palm of the hand. It occurs when there is a build-up of thick fibrous tissue in the palm that radiates into the fingers.

Frozen shoulder
This is a painful condition, occurring when the capsule within the shoulder joint thickens and stiffens. The cause is often unknown, but it can be more common in people with diabetes.

Ganglion
A benign mass or swelling overlying a joint or tendon that commonly appears on your wrist or finger joints. We can provide a rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Knee pain and sprains
If you have pain, discomfort, swelling or restricted movement in your knee, either from injury or progressive wear and tear it can affect your day-to-day life. Sprains can happen if you've damaged the muscles or one of the four ligaments that support the knee. Our knee specialists can help diagnose the cause of your pain or injury and offer the best treatment options for you.

Meniscus injury
A torn meniscus, or locked knee, is a common sports or exercise injury caused by forceful twisting. It can result in a swollen and painful knee joint and will require timely treatment.

Rotator cuff tears
The most common cause of shoulder pain. The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and their tendons which connect the shoulder blade to the upper arm. A tear will often restrict mobility.

Tennis elbow
This condition involves the tendons connecting your forearm muscles to your upper arm. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, our orthopaedic specialists can provide accurate diagnosis, expert advice and effective medical treatment.

We have a focus on advanced, non-surgical treatments to preserve joints and promote healing, including shockwave therapy, injections and PRP, as well as minimally invasive day-case surgeries wherever appropriate.

We completed one of the UK’s first day-case endoscopic knee replacement surgeries at The Wilmslow Hospital. We lead the way in shoulder procedures and were the first to routinely perform day-case shoulder replacement surgery.

Whatever your injury, condition or concern, you can expect advanced, comprehensive care, all the way from accurate imaging and same-day diagnostics to pre- and post-operative care, ensuring a seamless experience for you or your loved ones.
As a leading provider of private orthopaedic care, we offer rapid access to expert private orthopaedic and spinal specialists here in the Cheshire area, as well as across the UK.

It means we can confirm your appointment with an expert consultant within 24 hours.
Booking an appointment with us couldn't be easier. You can call us or book using our online consultant directory.

If your treatment is going to be covered by private medical insurance, we'll need your insurance member number and authorisation code, so you'll need to have them to hand along with your referral letter.

We'll do everything we can to confirm your consultation there and then but, if that's not possible, we'll get back to you with a phone call or email within 24 hours.
We know how important your mobility is, so if you suspect you may have a condition or injury that you’d like to check out, or you’re concerned about unexplained pain, we're here to help from the very first moment. Our specialists offer treatments for acute injuries as well as chronic orthopaedic conditions.

We offer consultant appointments within 24 hours and scans on the same day to get you back to doing the things you love as quickly as possible.
Your treatment and care begin as soon as you meet with one of our orthopaedic consultants. They are specialists in their field, meaning you can feel reassured and confident in your treatment.
If you can, we would advise you to wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment, as this will allow for easy movement while you’re being examined and having and tests or scans.
