Mr Rahul Patel is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at University College Hospital London and an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London. He is actively involved in postgraduate surgical education, contributing to higher surgical training on the London orthopaedic rotations, and is a co-developer and course tutor for the MSc in Sports Medicine, Exercise and Health at UCL.
He qualified in medicine at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine and completed early surgical training across several London teaching hospitals. This was followed by a dedicated two-year research period resulting in a higher degree from the University of London. His specialist orthopaedic training was undertaken on the Middlesex and University College Hospital rotation in London. Mr Patel subsequently completed subspecialist fellowship training in reconstructive arthroscopy and sports orthopaedic surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, USA.
Mr Patel’s clinical practice focuses on sports-related injuries, minimally invasive reconstructive arthroscopy, and joint preservation of the knee and hip. His areas of expertise include patellofemoral instability and stabilisation, meniscal repair, preservation, augmentation and transplantation, anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, medial collateral and posterolateral corner reconstruction, multiligament knee injury, cartilage preservation and regeneration, osteotomy around the knee, knee injections, partial and total knee replacement, hip labral repair, femoroacetabular impingement, adductor and proximal hamstring repair, fat pad impingement, and joint preservation procedures.
He is a member of multiple professional organisations including the Arthroscopy Association of North America, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, International Cartilage Repair Society, British Orthopaedic Association, British Association for Surgery of the Knee, British Society of Patellofemoral Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England, and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
His academic and clinical interests centre on sports injuries, arthroscopic techniques, minimally invasive treatment strategies, and preservation of joint function in both the knee and hip.
