Mr Philip Charlesworth is a Consultant Urological Surgeon from the UK. He was invited to join The Royal Marsden Hospital in London in 2023 after working at The Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading for over a decade. He has a regular out-patient clinic at the Harley Street Diagnostic Centre, and a regular operating list at The Princess Grace Hospital, Marylebone, London.
His expertise lies in treating Prostate and Bladder Cancer. He is widely recognised as one of the most experienced robotic surgeons in the UK, with a track record of performing over 1500 complex robotic pelvic oncological operations over the past decade.
Mr Charlesworth is internationally recognised for his advancements in improving patients' continence following pelvic cancer surgery, particularly through his pioneering work in the novel robotic technique of Retzius sparing robotic prostatectomy, Mr Charlesworth is also acknowledged as one of the leading Surgeons for robotic Cystectomy with intracorporeal ileal conduit/neobladder formation (iRARC) worldwide. His research publications demonstrate some of the lowest complication rates in the global literature.
Since 2017, he has served as the Director of the robotic fellowship programme at The Royal Berkshire, training six international fellows, including 4x Consultant Surgeons from Brisbane, Australia.
During his tenure in Berkshire, he chaired the specialist multidisciplinary cancer team at the Urology Berkshire Cancer Centre/South Thames Valley, overseeing approximately 1500 new cancer diagnoses annually.
Mr Charlesworth commenced his surgical training in 2001 in NHS and Military hospitals on the South Coast of the UK. In 2004, he pursued a post-graduate degree in the Molecular Genetics of Urological Malignancies at the University of Oxford's Institute of Molecular Medicine.
Starting in 2007, he undertook specialist surgical training in Urology & Uro-Oncology across hospitals in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, and Oxfordshire. His final years of training were dedicated to robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and open surgery for major urological cancers and subsequent surgical reconstruction.
In 2012, he was awarded a British Urological Foundation Robotic Preceptorship with Professor Indebir Gill and his team at the University of Southern California Institute of Urology, Los Angeles, California, USA. Additionally, he gained experience working with robotic surgical teams at Regina Elena Hospital, National Cancer Institute, Rome, Italy, Harlev University Hospital, Copenhagen, and the Institute of Karolinska, Stockholm.
Dr. Philip Charlesworth was appointed as a substantive Consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2012 and transitioned to a full-time Consultant role at The Royal Marsden Hospital in 2023.
