Professor Keith Roberts is a leading, expert Liver and Pancreas Surgeon. He is highly skilled and performs complex liver transplant, liver and pancreas surgery including borderline and locally advanced pancreatic cancer, vena cava surgery, upper abdominal sarcoma and gallbladder surgery. He has published over three hundred articles across hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions and is recognised for his specialist skills in managing complex disease. He has led national studies to improve pancreatic cancer care and contributes to shaping liver and pancreas surgery influencing national protocols, expert guidance and NICE recommendations. Much of his research focusses upon improving pancreatic cancer care, treatment and outcomes.
He is an internationally recognised expert in nutrition in pancreatic cancer and of delivering urgent surgery, even in the face of jaundice to patients with pancreatic cancer. His current research explores how to improve and maintain gut health and the gut microbiome to achieve improved outcomes in pancreatic cancer. He understands each patients needs and delivers pathways which aim to reduce the time to treatment, improve patient experience and provide a genuine holistic care package.
He has served two terms as the Royal College of Surgeons subspeciality lead for pancreatic surgery and is the past President of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He holds an MB ChB, PhD and FRCS, and is an active member of leading professional bodies including the International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association, the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons, where he also serves on the committee. After qualifying in 1999 from the University of Wales College of Medicine, he completed advanced training in general surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, liver transplantation and organ retrieval, including specialist training at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, before joining the hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2013.
Professor Robert’s clinical expertise spans the full range of liver, pancreas, bile duct and gallbladder disease, with particular experience in complex liver and pancreatic surgery.
