Mr Gianluca Bonanomi is a senior consultant surgeon based in London. He specialises in general surgery, upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery. He has been a consultant surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London since 2007 and has served as honorary senior lecturer with Imperial College of London.
He has a special interest in minimally invasive keyhole surgical techniques including laparoscopic surgery for inguinal hernia, gallbladder disease, acid reflux, morbid obesity and upper gastrointestinal conditions.
He has achieved extensive experience in metabolic and bariatric surgery and offers all types of treatment including endoscopic intragastric balloon placement, laparoscopic gastric banding, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and revisional procedures.
Mr Gianluca Bonanomi completed his medical education and general surgery training at the University of Pisa in Italy and subsequently undertook further specialist surgical training in the United States, United Kingdom and France. He completed a research fellowship in minimally invasive/robotic surgery and a clinical fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery and bariatrics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the USA, where he was appointed as attending surgeon and assistant professor, before moving to London.
He has been the clinical lead for the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Service at Chelsea and Westminter Hospital in London where he received clinical excellence awards for his role and for working towards the establishment of a recognised multidisciplinary referral centre.
Mr. Bonanomi has gained acclaim for his excellent and patient-focused practice. He is known by his patients for providing them with all the information they need about their condition, to allow them to make informed decisions about their health and medical care.
Mr Bonanomi holds professional memberships at the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), British Medical Association (BMA), Association Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS), British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) and Medical Protection Society (MPS). Former member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery (EAES).
His research interests have included minimally invasive surgical techniques, robotics applications in surgery and the metabolic effects of morbid obesity. He has published more than 150 articles on peer reviewed journals, book chapters and conference abstracts.
He directed the International Symposium "The Future of Obesity Treatment" held in London at the Royal College of Physicians in 2012. The conference was one of the first to bring together under the same roof surgeons, physicians, general practitioners and allied health professionals.
