I’m a Consultant in Pain Medicine and have spent the last 25 years helping people with painful conditions, and all that goes with long-term pain.

Pain occurs with many ailments, and we all experience it, but when it’s severe or persistent, it can be immensely distressing and have a major impact on your life.

Long-term pain can lead to anxiety and low mood, and the experience can be very isolating. This can be even more difficult if you’re suffering from unexplained pain, or if conventional treatments haven’t helped you.

How I work with patients

I believe in giving all my patients plenty of time to talk about their pain, and how it is affecting them. I listen carefully to everything they have to say, so I can understand their pain and their whole situation, better. Every person is an individual, and I try to tailor the care to meet their needs and wishes.

Much of conventional pain medicine focuses on pain medicines but these do not always bring about relief from long-term pain. In addition, most medications have side effects which can make life worse, not better. My job is to take a better and more experienced view of your medicines, and occasionally suggest an unusual medicine, suggested by my long experience.

Sometimes there may be a place for an interventional procedure, and I do have considerable experience with these, including some highly specialised ones for particular conditions.

In helping patients who are in pain, I regularly work closely with specialist physiotherapists and health psychologists. I’m also one of the UK’s most experienced prescribers of specialist pain medicines.

A bit about me

I founded the Royal Free’s multidisciplinary pain management clinic in 1997 and developed it over the years. Now retired from the NHS, I work in my Private Pain Medicine Practice, and I am the Lead Consultant of the Pain Functional Restoration Programme at the Wellington Hospital.

I am a Past President-Elect of the Pain Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

I’m a Senior Honorary Consultant in Pain Medicine to the Royal Society of Musicians, and I’m a senior doctor at the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM).

I trained in medicine at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, and for the past 25 years I've been helping patients who are in pain.
