Every year across the globe we join together to mark World Cancer Day. This initiative, led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), is an opportunity for us to come together and raise awareness of the impact of cancer around the world.

This year in support of the ‘I Am and I Will’ campaign we are uniting our patients, cancer clinicians and colleagues from across HCA UK, and reaffirming our commitment to supporting each of our patients throughout their cancer diagnosis, treatment and beyond.

More than ever, we are reminded of the power of collaborative and collective actions, which is why this World Cancer Day we’ve asked some of our patients and healthcare professionals to make a commitment to supporting actionable change. No matter how small the pledge, these small commitments can make a huge difference in reducing the global impact of cancer.

Having the opportunity to share all the stresses and strains, compare notes and listen to other people's stories, is something that is totally invaluable to everyone that is on a cancer journey.

Our patients share their cancer stories

Each patient’s experience of cancer is different, but we know that bringing these patients together to share their stories can be hugely beneficial to them, other patients and their family and friends. That’s why this World Cancer Day, some of our patients have committed to sharing their stories, read more below.

Chantal's cancer experience

Chantal was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2018 and learned she carried the BRCA1 gene. This discovery led to her opting to have a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

Jeff's penile cancer experience

Jeff was diagnosed with penile cancer in 2017 – rare for someone in their 40s. After undergoing several operations to remove the growth, he underwent a partial penectomy last year, and is now in remission.

Peter's breast cancer story

Following a GP appointment and referral to a consultant for tests, Peter told he had early stage breast cancer – a thought which had not crossed his mind being a man.

Lorraine's cancer story

Lorraine was diagnosed with a rare form of peritoneal cancer known as PMP in 2017. Since then, Lorraine has undergone three operations and is now living with the stable disease.

How can I help someone with cancer?

Each of us has the ability to support and empower patients living with cancer, but sometimes we struggle to have these conversions.
