One-stop breast cancer clinic at The Harborne Hospital

Fast access to an expert diagnosis

We understand how worrying  breast cancer symptoms can be. That’s why, at The Harborne Hospital’s One-Stop Breast Clinic, we give you all your initial diagnostic tests in one appointment.

As well as the expertise of our specialist consultants, you’ll have access to advanced technology and the latest tests and scans – including 3D mammography and image-guided biopsy.

We can usually offer you an appointment to see a consultant and have all your initial tests on the next working day. In some cases, same-day appointments may be possible.

We’ll discuss the results of your mammogram and ultrasound on the day of your scan. If you need a biopsy, then results are usually available within 2-3 working days.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of breast cancer, you’ll need a GP referral to our One-Stop Breast Clinic.

If you need to see a GP to discuss your symptoms, we can help. Our experienced GPs are available for same- or next-day appointments, in person, on the phone, or online.

You can see a GP on-site here at The Harborne Hospital, or at Birmingham Central Medical Practice located on Cornwall Street in the city centre.

If you’d prefer to see your existing GP, just ask them for HCA The Harborne Hospital and they can refer you.

If you have private medical insurance, you’ll need an authorisation code from your insurer before calling us. If you’re self-funding your care, you can call us directly to book.

While breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK, it can also affect men too. That’s why it’s so important for everyone to be breast aware – looking out for any changes to the appearance of your breasts or nipples.

If you notice any breast lumps, pain, nipple changes, discharge, or skin changes, it's important to get these checked by a specialist. An early breast cancer diagnosis can improve your treatment outcomes.

You have breast tissue under your arms and in your chest as well, so it’s important to check your armpits and all the way to your collarbone.

If you do find something while checking – either a lump or a change in your breast or nipple – you can have all the relevant tests at our One-Stop Breast Clinic. And, if you do receive a cancer diagnosis, you’ll have fast, direct access to the expertise you need and the latest treatment options. Find out more about our expert-led breast cancer services here.

What to expect?

What happens at a One-stop Breast Clinic

At The Harborne Hospital’s One-Stop Breast Clinic, we’re dedicated to giving you the gold standard of care, providing a triple assessment in just one appointment.

That means you can have an examination, all your initial diagnostic tests and, if necessary, a biopsy all on the same day.

There are three stages to this:

01

A consultation with a breast cancer expert

During your initial appointment, your consultant will review your medical and family history and carry out a full breast examination.

02

Mammogram and/or ultrasound

Next, you’ll have some imaging tests. The team will discuss these with you and recommend the most appropriate ones for you. This may include a mammogram (2D or 3D), or an ultrasound scan – sometimes both. If that is the case, we can arrange for you to have them all in one visit.

The results of your mammogram and ultrasound scan will be available the same day.

03

Biopsy

Depending on the results of your scan(s), we may need to carry out a biopsy. If so, we can usually do it on the same day. The results of your biopsy should be available within 2-3 working days.

We are the only independent hospital in Birmingham to provide biopsies using the Brevera Breast Biopsy System. This is a less invasive option, which combines biopsy with real-time imaging, reduces the length of the biopsy procedure and can make the whole procedure a more comfortable one.

Breast screening at The Harborne Hospital

Routine breast screening

Regular screening is the most effective way to catch breast cancer early, often before any symptoms can be seen or felt.

Detecting cancer at an early stage can make treatment more effective and significantly improve outcomes. At The Harborne Hospital we recommend routine breast screening for women over the age of 40.

You don’t need a referral for routine breast screening, you can simply call us to book.
